JEE Main 2019, merit list for admission to engineering colleges of India including IIT's will be released on basis of percentile other than the raw marks of the aspirants scored in the entrance examination. The changes are in support of two-cycle computer based examination system introduced to JEE mains this year.
JEE main is the gateway for the students who wish to appear for JEE Advanced which is the qualifying exam for admission in Indian Institute of Technology. As from this year, the examination pattern has been changed for engineering and architecture courses and exam will be conducted twice in a year (January and April), NTA has announced a modified score card fully based on the final merit list for admissions in IITs.
One of the senior officials of the HRD ministry in his statement said that “normalization procedure based on the format in percentile score to arrive at the NTA score has been based on the format in practice for the undergraduate-MBBS test conducted by the AIIMS Delhi.”
The official also added “A core group of experts from IIT Roorkee, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi and IIT Guwahati, along with IIM-Lucknow, NITs, UGC, IASRI Pusa and AIIMS Delhi. Have been asked to finalize the process for calculating the NTA score.”
From next year, it will be the first time when aspirants of JEE Main will have an option to take the entrance examination twice in a year in the format where the exam will be carried out over a period of in different sessions. The concept aims to eliminate the chances of manipulation and cheating.
An NTA official explains the concept and said, “Candidates will get different sets of questions per sessions and though efforts will be made to maintain equivalence among various question papers, the difficulty level of question papers in different sessions may not exactly be the same.” The percentile score of each student in a particular session will be based on the comparative performance of the students grouped in that particular shift.
The percentile scoring system is introduced to neutralize the scenario where neither the students get benefited nor have a disadvantage, as there could be candidates may get a tougher set and ends up scoring fewer marks.
The score will be calculated at different steps which will start from allocating the percentile of 100 to the highest scorer of each session and marks obtained by students within the mark of highest and lowest scores and then converted into an appropriate percentile. Other than overall percentile a subject-wise percentile for Physics, Chemistry and math will be calculated too. To minimize the chances of bunched up and tie scores, the percentile score will be calculated up to 7 decimals.
At the final stage scoring, all the percentile scored in different sections will be merged together and a composite merit list will be prepared in descending order. In case of a tie between two candidates score will be calculated on basis of Percentile score in mathematics, followed by physics and chemistry. In case of a tie there also candidate will be given merit on basis of their age. If further there is a chance of tie both the candidates will be allotted a joint rank.
