JEE Main 2019 Eligibility

The Eligibility Criteria of JEE Main examination has been declared by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The candidates aspiring to appear for JEE Main examination must fulfill the determined Eligibility Criteria to apply for the examination. The JEE Main eligibility criteria include the following factors - Qualification, Age limit, Attempt number, year of appearing and other relevant details.

It must be noted that the JEE Main Eligibility Criteria determines whether the candidate can appear for the examination or not. It doesn't deal with eligibility for admissions in NITs, IIITs, SFTIs and CFTIs. Earlier the examination was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) but from the current year, the examination will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). From the year 2019, the examination will be conducted twice a year i.e. in the month of January and April.

JEE Main Eligibility criteria have been detailed as follows:

  • Date of birth of the applicant
  • Qualifying Examination
  • Subjects of the Qualifying Examination
  • Marks secured by the candidate in the Qualifying Examination
  • Remaining number of attempts

Age Limit

  • There is no maximum age limit to appear for JEE Main examination.
  • The candidate must have passed Class XII or an equivalent examination from a recognized Board in the year 2017 or 2018.
  • The candidate appearing for Class XII or an equivalent examination in the current year can also appear for JEE Main examination.

Academics Requirement

  • The Candidate must have passed Class XII or an equivalent examination from a recognized board in the year 2017 or 2018.
  • The candidate appearing for Class XII in the current year can also apply for JEE Main examination.

Mandatory Subjects

Mandatory Subjects for Engineering Students:

  1. Language
  2. Physics
  3. Mathematics
  4. Chemistry/ Biology/ Biotechnology/ Technical Vocational Subject
  5. Any other subject

Mandatory Subjects for Architecture Students:

  1. Language
  2. Physics
  3. Mathematics
  4. Chemistry/ Biology/ Biotechnology/ Technical Vocational Subject
  5. Any other subject

Maximum Number of Attempts

  • 3 Attempts

Eligibility Criteria for admissions in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs:

  • The candidate must have secured a minimum of 75 percent aggregate in Class XII or equivalent examination/must be in the top 20 percentile in Class XII.
  • A relaxation of 10 percent is provided to the candidates of Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe Category i.e. reserved candidates require 65 percent aggregate to appear for JEE Main examination.

Eligibility Criteria for admissions in Architecture Programmes:

  • The candidate must have passed Class XII with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as mandatory subjects.
  • The candidate must have secured a minimum of 50 percent aggregate in Class XII.

List of Qualifying Examinations to appear for JEE Main:

  • The candidate must have passed Class XII or any other equivalent examination from any recognized board such as CBSE, ICSE, AISSCE etc.
  • The candidate must have passed an Intermediate or Pre-University course or Pre-Degree course examination conducted by a recognized Board or University.
  • The candidate must have passed the Final examination of Joint Services Wing of NDA (National Defence Academy).
  • The candidate must have passed Vocational Examination of H.S.C.
  • The candidate must have passed Senior Secondary Examination from the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of 5 subjects.
  • The candidate must have passed a minimum of three-years Diploma from AICTE or State Board of Technical Education.
  • The candidate must have passed 10+2 from a school, board, university examination in foreign country or India which is recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • The candidate must have passed General Certificate Education examination at an advanced level for ensuring admission to IITs.
  • The candidate must have passed HSC Examination by Cambridge University/ International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Eligibility Criteria for Droppers:

‘Droppers' refer to two-type of candidates. One, those candidates who have dropped a year after Class XII and two, those candidates who appeared for JEE Main examination but failed to qualify it.

Following are the JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for Droppers:

  • No Age Limit.
  • The candidate must have passed Class XII.
  • The candidate can appear for three-consecutive JEE Main examination. Hence, there should not be any gap between years.
  • The candidate aspiring to seek admission in NITs, IIITs & CFTIs must have secured an aggregate of minimum 75 percent in Class XII. A relaxation of 10 percent is provided to the candidates of Reserved Category. Here, Reserved Category refers to Schedule Caste and Scheduled Tribe.
  • The candidate must have passed Class XII with a minimum of 5 subjects and Physics and Mathematics as mandatory subjects.
