In the series of premier institutes of engineering in the nation, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-Kanpur) is an extension of the vision to establish world-class technology based engineering institute in India. IIT Kanpur was established in the year 1959 and Government of India under the Institutes of Technology Act. , announced it to be an Institute of National Importance. It was December 1959 the institute was started in the canteen building provided by Harcourt Butler Technological Institute at Agricultural Gardens, Kanpur. Later in the year 1963, the Institute was given its own campus and the college since then is expanding at the locality of Kalyanpur in Kanpur district.

Started with the vision "To create, disseminate and translate knowledge in science, engineering and allied disciplines that will best serve the society." The institute is at 293 positions in the rankings of World University Rankings 2018. The college offers a wide range of courses from undergraduate to Ph.D. and at present 3938 and 2540 students are enrolled under undergraduate and postgraduate courses respectively. The campus is spread in 1055 Acres with 108 buildings dedicated to academic departments, student hostels, auditoriums and other facilities.
