What is XAT ?

XAT Exam 2023 - Date Out (8 Jan), Application Starts (10 Aug), Fees, Age Limit, Syllabus, Pattern

XLRI Jamshedpur has released the XAT Exam Date through an official notice on its official website. XAT 2023 will be conducted on 8 January 2023. As per the previous trend of XAT Exam, the examination conducting authority has been holding the exam on the first Sunday of January but the first Sunday of the year 2023 is on 1st January i.e. New Year's day, hence the exam is scheduled to be conducted on the following Sunday i.e. 8 January. XAT Registration will begin from 10 August 2022 and students willing to apply for the exam can register themselves on the official website by filling the application form. 

  • Students must note that the XAT Exam Date have been confirmed by the authorities. The exact XAT Exam Date of the exam is 8 January as per the announcement made by XLRI Jamshedpur recently. Students interested in taking the exam can fill the XAT Application Form on the official website i.e. https://xatonline.in/ from 10 August 2022.

What is XAT Exam?

The Xavier Aptitude Test prominently known as XAT is a National Level Entrance Test conducted by Xavier School of Management (XLRI) Jamshedpur on account of Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI).  XAT is conducted every year to select potential students for management programs offered by top business schools, associated with the institution as part of XAMI. Apart from XAMI, 160 other MBA Colleges also will accept XAT Score for shortlisting students in their various PGDM 2023-25 management programs. XLRI Jamshedpur has been conducting the exam for more than 70 years now. Last year the pattern of the entrance exam was changed from offline pen-paper mode to computer-based online mode.

The registration process can be completed and the application form of XAT 2023 can be filled online on the official website of XAT from 10 August 2022. Candidates willing to take the exam must also make the registration fee of INR 1800 via any online payment gateway. The last date to apply for XLRI XAT Exam 2023 is expected to be 30 November 2022.

  • Students can still apply for many top Business schools such as IMT, FORE, TAPMI, and BIMTECH, as their application window is still open.

XAT Exam 2023 Notification

XLRI Jamshedpur has released XAT Exam 2023 notification on its official website. This notification consists of XAT Exam Date 2023 and other XAT Exam Dates such as registration start, registration end, admit card release, etc. 

As per XAT Previous Year Question Paper by XLRI Jamshedpur, XAT Exam Pattern underwent a few changes again. The exam to be conducted on 2nd Jan will have 101 questions instead of 100 questions as the last year's question paper. XAT Essay Writing is again a part of XAT Question Paper after 3 years. Despite COVID-19 situation across the country, XLRI conducted XAT 2022 as a center-based test across 72 cities in the country.

Changes Introduced in XAT Exam 2023

There are a few changes that XLRI Jamshedpur has brought in XAT 2023 Exam. These changes are mentioned below:

  • XAT 2023 Application Fee has now been increased to INR 1800 to INR 1750.
  • Total No. of questions in the paper has been changed to 101 from 100.
  • Test timing will be from 9:30 AM to 12:40 PM.
  • Total number of questions increased from 100 to 101.
  • Essay Writing Test has been reintroduced. (It was scrapped in 2019) (Not taken into account for percentile calculation)
  • XAT 2023 will have 100 MCQ Type questions and 1 Descriptive question.
  • Scribes of Candidates with visual impairment will be given extra 25 minutes to solve Part 1 of the exam.
  • All the questions are of MCQ type.
  • General Knowledge and Essay Writing Section n Part 2 will have no negative marking.
  • Essay shall be considered and evaluated after the candidates are shortlisted for the Personal Interview round.
  • Candidates will be rewarded with 1 mark for each correct answer.
  • 25% of the total mark of a question will be deducted as penalty if answered wrongly.
  • After every 8 unattempted questions, 0.10 marks will be deducted as penalty for every unattempted question.
  • Candidates with visually impaired conditions will be provided additional 25 minutes to solve part 1 of the question paper.
  • All the questions will contain 5 options with one correct answer.

XAT Registration Process, Registration Fee, and Required Documents

XAT Registration for XAT 2023 will start from 10 August 2023 and the conducting authorities will make the XAT Application Form available online on the official website. In order to apply for XAT 2023, aspirants are advised to visit the official website of XAT i.e. www.xatonline.in and register themselves for further procedure of application.

Candidates applying for the exam must ensure that they fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria before applying for the examination. It is important to possess a bachelor's degree while applying for the examination.

XAT Eligibility

One of the most important things that students applying for XAT Exam 2023  must keep in mind is XAT 2023 Eligibility Criteria. The eligibility criteria for the exam is generally defined by the examination conducting authority i.e. Xavier School of Management (XLRI) and students must ensure that they fulfill the requirements of this set of requirements formed by XLRI.

Following are the key point one must consider:

  • Applying candidates must possess a bachelor's degree of minimum 3 years of duration.
  • There is no age bar for XAT 2023.
  • Candidates in their final year of graduation can also apply for XAT 2023.
  • Final year candidates appearing in XAT 2023 must have completed their graduation before any further admission procedure.

Besides no age limit filter, XAT 2023 requires no minimum qualifying marks in graduation in order to be eligible to apply for the exam. Candidates in final year must complete their graduation by June 2023.

The admit card date for any entrance examination is released after the successful completion of registration procedure. It has been informed that XAT Admit Card releases in December on the official website of XAT. XAT Exam Pattern

As per XAT 2023 Exam Pattern , the XAT question paper is divided into two parts i.e. Part 1 and Part 2 depending on the type of questions, one is objective type and the other one is subjective type. The examination pattern can also be divided into moderate and difficult depending upon the difficulty level of the examination.

  • The question paper is divided in 2 parts namely Part 1 and Part 2 contributing to a total of 101 questions. The two papers need to be attempted in a single slot of the exam in the given time period of 3 hours.
  • XAT Question Paper consists of 101 questions and it is a Computer Based Test (CBT). The question paper needs to be completed in 190 minutes i.e. 3 hours and 10 minutes wherein there is no sectional time limit to attempt these questions.

XAT Syllabus

XAT Syllabus 2023 is generally divided into 4 sections namely Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension, Decision Making, Quantitative Aptitude, and General Awareness. Except the last one, General Awareness, the other three sections are determined for percentile calculation in XAT Result and XLRI Shortlisting Criteria. Marks obtained by candidates in General Awareness are not considered for percentile calculation but are later taken into account for the Personal Interview round. 

Like other MBA Exams, the conducting authorities of XAT 2023 haven't formed a definitive syllabus for the examination due to which the preparation of XAT Exam becomes difficult. XAT Exam Day Guidelines

Candidates willing to take the XAT Exam will be advised to follow the instructions and exam day guidelines defined by the examination conducting authority for a hassle-free exam day. Below mentioned are some of the xat exam day guidelines that they must follow on the examination day:

XAT Preparation for XAT 2023 should ideally take six to nine months. As one of the most difficult MBA entrance exams among its peers, the XAT requires a lot of time and efforts. Eligibility Criteria of XAT is as follows:

  • Graduate or bachelor degree - Candidate should be a graduate or should have a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized institute or university in order to apply for this exam.
  • Candidates have to complete their graduation by June - Candidate should have completed their graduation by the month of June only then he/she can apply for XAT exam.
  • Final year students of graduation -  Candidates who are in final year of graduation are eligible for applying to XAT.
  • The eligibility for XLRI programmes like Human Resource Management (HRM), Business Management (BM) is similar. Candidates with three years of work experience will be given preference in Global Business Management.

Note: There's no specific age limit for XAT exam.

The steps that have to be fulfilled for XAT Registration are as follows: personal details, payment details and other enclosures that would have to be provided with the XAT Application.

To register for the exam candidates need to follow the below steps:

  • Visit xatonline.net.in click on Register, create a new account with your personal email id, you will receive a unique XAT ID and registration link.
  • Click on the link and create your own password. (Next time you will be allowed to log in with this XAT ID and password).
  • Select your Citizenship (Indian/ Foreign / NRI).
  • If you are interested to apply for XLRI, select the program of your choice Business Management (BM)/Human Resource Management (HRM)/Global Business Management(GBM)/General Management Programme (GMP). Candidates not interested in any of the XLRI programs can skip this step.

Application Fees

The XAT Application fee is INR 1650 for all categories. INR 2000 would be charged for late application. The fee details are as mentioned below.

Applicants can choose either of the following modes for XAT Application fee payment :

  • Online - Credit/Debit/Netbanking
  • Offline - Cash Payment or DD. A printout of XAT Pay-in-slip and visit any IDBI Bank branch to make cash payment. DD has to be made in favor of "XLRI Jamshedpur A/c XAT" payable at Jamshedpur.

*In case of the offline mode, candidates should upload the fee payment details on the XAT Registration page.

XAT 2023 Admit Card

Admit card can be downloaded from official website of XAT once the admit cards are released by the authorities. The admit card carries all the personal information of the candidate along with the informations related to exam date, test center and the timings of the exam.

Steps to Download XAT Admit Card:

  • Visit the official website
  • Click on the ‘Download admit card' tab
  • Enter details like XAT 2023 Registration Number and DOB in DD/MM/YY format and enter submit
  • Download the admit card
  • Take a printout of the admit card

It would be ideal if you take note of that your XAT Admit Card is a mandatory document required to be carried to the exam centre. In the event that you don't have the printed copy of your XAT Admit card appended with your photo on it, you won't get an entry to the XAT exam center.

XAT 2023 Preparation Tips

XAT Exam is not tougher than CAT, it's almost same as CAT.

Here are some of the quick Preparation Tips: 

  • XAT is not a tougher exam than CAT, it simply requires a different mindset.
  • Keep the different sections of the exam in mind and check the XAT selection procedure properly.
  • It is a pen and paper test, there are no individual section time limits. Make sure you give enough time to your core strength areas so that you can score more.
  • Do not spend excessive time on GK questions and be ready to leave the questions you are unsure about. Guesswork in this area can be risky.
  • XAT Decision Making and Analytical Reasoning is the toughest part of the paper.
  • The kind of questions that are asked is Ethical Dilemmas, Financial Case Studies, and General Management Circumstances.
  • The answers should be well-thought out logically, without favoring anyone and no bias can be incorporated at arriving at a decision.
  • The Important Areas for Quantitative Ability are Geometry, Number Systems, Probability and Functions.
  • General Knowledge was initially introduced in 2013. Out of 30 Questions, 12 were on Current Affairs and 18 on Static General Knowledge.
  • XAT 2018 is usually conducted on the First Sunday of the year.

XAT 2023 Exam Pattern

XAT is an online test consisting of two papers

Paper I: It is an objective type paper covering three sections- Quantitative Ability, English Language and Logical Reasoning, and Decision Making.

Paper II: This paper comprises of General Knowledge and Essay writing questions.

Paper 2: General Knowledge and Essay Writing

The details about XAT 2019 Results are as follows:

  • The score of XAT 2019 would remain valid for a year.
  • On the basis of the result, the candidate would be able to get admitted into more than 150 B-schools in the country.
  • The percentage and percentile of GK section would be calculated independently and would not be included in the calculation of the total percentile.
  • The highest XAT score last year was 51.75.

XAT 2018 Result

According to XAT 2018 results,

  • A total percentage of 51.28 was equivalent to 99.751 percentile
  • A total percentage of 47.12 was equivalent to 99.278 percentile
  • A total percentage of 45.64 was equivalent to 98.896 percentile
  • A total percentage of 42.82 was equivalent to 97.891 percentile
  • A total percentage of 40.83 was equivalent to 96.842 percentile

XAT Cut-Offs

XAT cut off will be declared soon after the XAT result is out. College with the highest cutoff is XIMB with 95% cutoff, cut offs of XLRI varies from 88 to 93 and colleges like IMT GZB, Great Lakes Institute of management has 90% cut off.

XAT 2023 Selection Procedure

XAT score is considered to shortlist candidates for the further selection process. There are two steps in which the admission procedure can be divided.

XAT Admission Procedure – Shortlist

The candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of the performance of XAT. While some B-schools will only consider the score of Paper 1, i.e. the objective type part, some other B-schools will consider the scores of Paper 2 as well as Paper 1.

XAT Admission Procedure – Final Selection

The final selection process for XAT will vary from B-School to B-School. However, the common process is to conduct Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). Some institutes such as MICA conducts Group Exercise in lieu of GD.

Group Discussion: Each group consists of 8-15 candidates. All the groups typically are required to speak for about 15-20 mins on a topic.  The topics would be related to current affairs, politics, social issues such as women's rights and emancipation or any other issue concerning advertising, education, technology or business.

XAT Highlights

XAT exam is scheduled on 6th January 2019 for about 3.5 hours. The registration window would remain open until 30 November 2018. The following are some points students must consider:

1) Late Registration Window: XLRI has made arrangements to enable late registrations. Applicants unable to register by November 30 can pay an additional fee of INR 350 over and above INR 1650. The last date to register for XAT exam is open until December 7, 2018.

2) XLRI Programme Additional Fee: The Late Fee for XLRI Programme stands increased to INR 500 instead of INR 300 for the number of programmes in which a candidate is interested.

3) Exam Duration: The exam is conducted for a duration of 3.5 hours that would be conducted in an online format. An additional time limit of half an hour would be allotted to the candidates.

4) Important Dates: XAT Important Dates have been announced for the candidates which must be taken note of in order to prepare well.
