What is CMAT ?

Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) is an all-India level entrance examination conducted by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) every year as per the directions of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. CMAT would be held on October 21, 2018 this year for all the candidates. The CMAT entrance examination is conducted by AICTE as per directions issued by MHRD, The Government of India. CMAT determines the admission of the candidates into the B-schools that accept the exam. 

As per the CMAT exam pattern, it consists of 4 sections - Logical reasoning, General Awareness, Language and Competitive Techniques. The CMAT 2018 scores would be accepted by 1000 schools that are accepted by AICTE. 

The CMAT is a three-hour computer based online test which is conducted in a single session to evaluate the candidate's ability across various segments like Quantitative Technique, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension and General Awareness.This test facilitates Institutions to select suitable graduate candidates for admission in all Management programs. The CMAT score is accepted by all AICTE-Approved Institutions/University Departments/Constituent Colleges/Affiliated Colleges. 

CMAT Application procedure began on October 20 and would continue on until December 20, 2017. The CMAT Registration procedure is slated to be online. Candidates would be required to fill in details relating to personal, academic and professional life. The CMAT Application procedure consists of the 3 steps:

  1. CMAT Online Registration
  2. CMAT Application Fee payment
  3. The Application form should be filled in with the required details.

The applicants would be required to select their test centers in their order of preference. The candidates can select up to 3 test centers in the application suiting their proximity and convenience.Candidates shall be allotted test centers and exam dates on a first come and first served basis. The allotment of test centers would depend on the availability of test centers in the choice of the exam centers that have been mentioned in the application process.

The CMAT Application fee is fixed at INR 1400 for the General/OBC Category and INR 700 for categories such as Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/Persons with Disability and Female.The CMAT Application fee can be paid either by cash, debit card or by net banking. The CMAT examination would be held across 62 cities all over India.

CMAT Admit card would be made available for those applicants who register successfully for the entrance examination. Candidates would receive CMAT notification on their registered email address. Candidates would be able to download their admit card before the test by entering the login credentials. The CMAT result would be announced in the month of February 2018.

CMAT 2018 Exam Pattern

The AICTE has prescribed CMAT Exam Pattern. As per the CMAT Exam Pattern, the test would be conducted in an online mode. CMAT is conducted for admission into programs like MBA, PGDM and PGCM that are offered by numerous B-schools in India. CMAT would be held on January 21, 2018. Candidates wishing to successfully register for the exam between October 18 and December 15 would be taking the test.

The CMAT Exam Pattern consists of the following sections that are detailed as below:

CMAT Exam Pattern is important for the understanding of the candidates failing which a good attempt cannot be made in the exam. The highlights of the CMAT Exam Pattern are as detailed as below:

  1. CMAT is a computer-based exam that is conducted for admission into B-schools that are approved by AICTE.
  2. CMAT would be held in a single session and would contain 4 sections.
  3. The total number of questions in CMAT is 100, and every section would consist of 25 questions. 
  4. Four options would be given for every question from which candidates would be selecting one option.
  5. The duration of the exam would be for 180 minutes.
  6. Without any time limit for any section, about an hour could be spent for every section.


CMAT 2018 Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for CMAT has been mentioned as below:
  1. Only Indian Citizens can apply.
  2. Candidates obtaining graduation degree in any discipline would be eligible to apply for CMAT.
  3. Candidates in their final year of the undergraduate programme under 10+2+3, a result which would be declared prior to the commencement of the next academic session can apply only for CMAT.
  4. Age restriction has not been specified by any authority for writing the CMAT Examination.

The eligibility for Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma Programs has been detailed as below:

  1. Candidates should acquire Bachelor Degree for a duration of 3 years with 50% for General and 45% for SC/ST
  2. Candidates who possess three years of Bachelor Degree may pursue PGCM Programme.
  3. Candidates should be in possession of a 3 year Bachelor Degree with 50% (45% for Reserved). They should have 5 years of managerial experience.


CMAT 2018 Application Procedure

In the course of fulfilling the CMAT Application Procedure, the candidates should fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Access to a good internet connection is necessary to avoid interruptions.
  2. All prior academic qualifications should be kept ready by the candidate to fulfill the CMAT registration.
  3. A scanned photo should be kept ready for uploading purposes.
  4. The signature on a white background must be scanned in order to be uploaded.
  5. A valid contact number is necessary to be provided.
  6. An Email address would also be required to be provided for further communication.
  7. A debit/credit card should be used to make payment of fees.
  8. All the guidelines mentioned on the CMAT Application Form should be followed by the applicant.


Application Fees

CMAT application form would be available from October 18 to December 15, 2018, for all candidates. The last date to apply for CMAT Application Form December 15, 2017. The CMAT examination would be conducted on January 21, 2018 and the admit card would be issued in the month of January. CMAT 2018 Study Material

Preparing for CMAT is a challenging and tough activity. CMAT has a very vast syllabus and the candidates should be able to prioritize and enable their preparation for the CMAT Examination in a right way. This can be done by ensuring that the preparation for CMAT Examination is in the right direction. A lot of study material on CMAT is being made available for students that are focused on a multitude of sections and topics. The books in general that are used to prepare for CMAT are the same as any other MBA entrance examination. 

CMAT currently is being conducted on a yearly basis instead of twice a year. CMAT Examination would have 4 major sections that would be contributing to your score. Any section within the overall time limit can be attempted. A high score would be required to be scored in each of the sections so that a balanced overall score can be got by any student.

About 2-3 hours a day should be devoted by any student to crack CMAT 2018 with a high score in the examination. CMAT would not be requiring you to attempt all the questions perfectly but would be requiring you to at least maximize your correct attempts and minimize your errors on the examination. CMAT can be cracked with an intelligent approach in mind by the students. If half of the questions are attempted right, students would be able to get 90+percentile

CMAT 2018 Admit Card

The CMAT Admit card has been released on January 12, 2018. CMAT Admit Card would be available in an online mode. Candidates would have to enter their email address or username with password. CMAT Admit card would have the details - roll number, time and date, photograph, signature, test center details along with others. Candidates would be able to download the CMAT Admit Card until 21 January 2018. 

The CMAT Admit Card hard copy would not be sent to the candidates. The admit cards would be issued only to those candidates whose successful registration process is over. CMAT Admit card is an important document for candidates without which candidates would not be allowed inside the examination hall. The steps to download the CMAT Admit card are given as follows:

CMAT 2018 Preparation Tips

CMAT has four sections: Quantitative Ability, Language Comprehension, Logical Reasoning and General Awareness. Here are some preparation tips  that one can refer to while preparing for the exam

  • One can read the Static GK study material and the Latest Current Affairs. Try to practice with Free Online GK tests available.
  • To brush up the maths, try to revise your school books from classes 5 to 10. Review the basic concepts and solve the problems at the end of the chapters.
  • As quick calculations can be a great help, work on tables, fractions-decimal conversions, squares, cubes etc. It will save you immense time, thereby boosting your score. 
  • To tackle Language Comprehension for, it is advisable to read books, newspapers and periodicals daily, with a clear focus on new words. Consult a good dictionary for this purpose. 
  • One can improve the Logical Reasoning by practicing with puzzle books like Shakuntala Devi's. 
  • To improve the Data Interpretation, observe the data carefully and derive relevant conclusions. Try to work on approximations, decimal-fraction conversions and percentage to improve the performance here.

Documents to be Carried

The important documents that need to be carried on the day of the test are:

  • ATTESTED COPY of CMAT 2018 (Second Test) Admit Card with recent passport size photo pasted on it. ATTESTATION can also be done by the head of the Institutes as well.
  • At least one original (not photocopied/scanned copy) and valid (not expired) photo identification. The name on your photo identification must match your name as entered in the CMAT application. Acceptable forms of photo identification types are limited to Driver's license, Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, UID card or a notarized Affidavit (in English) with Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and Residential Address. Photocopies of the original are not acceptable. Candidates will not be permitted to take the test if photo identification is not presented.
  • SC/ST candidates are required to bring the valid caste certificate in Original and an attested photocopy. 
  • Physically Disabled candidates are required to bring the valid Disability certificate in Original and an attested photocopy.

Note: You will have to store all other personal items at the test center at your own risk. Please do not bring any other items to the test center, as they are not permitted into the testing center.

Language Comprehension: For vocabulary, ‘Six weeks to words of power' by Wilfred Funk, if followed religiously, it can expand your vocabulary in about 2 months. Though ‘Word Power Made Easy' is also recommended by Norman Lewis. For Reading Comprehension, solving 1-2 RC passages online on a daily basis. Websites like www.lofoya.comand give the candidates ample practice for the same. Also, reading articles related to various topics such as philosophy, sociology, history, art, literature etc. from really helps. This improves familiarity with various topics, thus increasing the speed of solving RCs.

General Awareness: For General Awareness, reading newspapers is a must.  A good amount of information is available in a condensed format. A very good site for GA preparation is Make sure to spend only 10-15 minutes on GA during CMAT. Guesswork doesn't work here. You either know the answer or don't.

Score Evaluation

In order to ensure  fairness  and  equity  in  comparison  of performances of  the  candidates  across  different  test  sessions, the scores  of  the candidates  shall  be  subjected  to  a  process  of Normalization.  The  Normalization process to be implemented shall adjust for location and scale differences of score distributions across different forms and the scaled scores obtained by this process shall be converted into percentiles for purposes of shortlisting.

For  purposes  of  reporting,  Scaled  Scores  for  each  Section  (Section  I:  Quantitative Ability, Section II: Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning, Section III: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension) and Total along with the Percentile shall be published.

CMAT 2017 Question Paper Analysis

CMAT 2017 was conducted in one-time slot on January 28, 2017. The performance of the student in the sections such as Language Comprehension and General Awareness is a significant differentiator in terms of their performance while other two sections on Quantitative and Data Interpretation mostly had questions which could be done easily. 

Arithmetic and Number system was mostly in the quantitative section with about 50% allotted to each of these topics. About 3 to 4 questions were from sections like Geometry and Mensuration and the certain amount of questions were from Algebra. The difficulty level of this section was moderate and was doable by any student with good mathematic skills.

Logical Reasoning section had easy to moderate questions from Verbal as well as Analytical Reasoning section. Analytical Reasoning questions were from an array of questions such as grouping, distribution, arrangement, coding/decoding, clock and calendar.

There were four Reading Comprehension passages and every passage had 6 questions and the other passages had 3 questions each. Excepting one passage, the rest was easy to read and understand. Most of the questions were known to be straightforward while it was time-consuming. 

General Awareness Section had questions on current affairs and a lot of questions were asked. In this section, an attempt of 18-20 questions was considered ideal. An attempt of 85-88 questions was considered ideal.


CMAT 2018 Result

CMAT Result would be tentatively announced by February 2018. The CMAT Result would be announced by way of a merit list and the entrance examination would be held on January 21, 2018. The CMAT result consists of candidate's section wise and the overall scores that are got by them. The CMAT scorecard of every candidate would be released along with the exam result. Candidates would be able to download the CMAT score card by entering their login credentials. 

On the basis of CMAT result, a merit list shall be created after which the participants would be announcing their cutoff. CMAT merit list would be containing the following details - Roll Number, Rank and Scores. A lot of colleges that are affiliated to AICTE would be accepting this score to determine admission to PGDM/MBA or other courses.

The procedure to check CMAT result is given as below:

  1. The CMAT official website would be required to be visited. 
  2. The CMAT score and percentile would be required to be checked.
  3. The candidate can login to the CMAT profile to download the CMAT Admit card. 

For every correct answer in CMAT, the candidate would be awarded 4 marks and for every incorrect answer, 1 mark would be deducted.

The various affiliated B-Schools are expected to release CMAT 2017 Cut- offs after the results are announced in the 3rd week of January 2017.
