About Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee
IIT Roorkee is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India contributing to technological education and applied research. The Indian Institute of Technology was established in the year 1847. It has been awarded with accreditation by NAAC and also approved by AICTE and UGC. It is located in Roorkee, Uttrakhand. The NIRF 2023 has ranked the institute at 5th position under the engineering category.
The Institute offers graduate courses in 10 disciplines, postgraduate courses in 55 disciplines, and Doctoral Programs in all the departments. IIT Roorkee has around 22 academic departments in all streams like Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Management programs. The institute also emphasizes scientific and technological education and research. IIT Roorkee History: IIT Roorkee is India’s oldest engineering college, which was converted into the league of the IITs in the year 2001. It was set up as the College of Civil Engineering in British India back in 1847 by James Thompson the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Province. Interestingly, the primary reason for the establishment was to train officers and surveyors who were engaged in constructing the Ganges Canal. IIT Roorkee was renamed in 1854 after the demise of Thomason’s death and the completion of the canal the college was given the name of Thomason College of Civil Engineering by Proby Cautley, who was the designer and projector of the canal. It further changed its name to the University of Roorkee in 1949, and it was finally given the name IIT Roorkee in the year 2001.

IIT Roorkee Courses
The IIT Roorkee Courses have undergone a lot of changes. The Electrical Engineering department was added to the college only in the year 1897 and the master’s courses in architecture or the (M. Arch.) were instituted only in 1969–70. Some years later in the year 1978, the IIT Roorkee which was then called the University of Roorkee was merged with the Institute of Paper Technology.
IIT Roorkee Courses are divided into three types-
1. Undergraduate Courses
2. Postgraduate Courses
3. Integrated Courses
The courses offered by IIT Roorkee are provided through 21 academic departments.
IIT Roorkee Institute accepts students into BTech, BArch and integrated MSc integrated MTech courses based on their JEE scores. Earlier when IIT Roorkee was not part of IIT the students had to go through the Roorkee Entrance Exam (REE) to get admission into the institute. The selection rate for the exam was close to 0.25%, hence it was considered the second hardest exam after IIT-JEE. GATE scores are used for Admission to PG programs in engineering and architecture in addition to a written test and interview. For PG programs in fundamental sciences, IIT JAM score is considered. For admission into the MBA, the CAT scores are considered for admission along with interviews.
Along with the engineering courses, the Indian Institute of Technology also offers a two-year residential MBA program for which the admissions, starting in 2011, will be done based on the Common Admission Test, thus replacing the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) previously conducted by the IITs. The institute also offered an interdisciplinary program in computer applications leading to a degree in Master of Computer Applications (MCA). The standalone MCA course has been removed from the courses.

IIT Roorkee Admissions
IIT Roorkee Admission to various courses is primarily determined by entrance exams. The JEE Advance exam for admission in B.Tech courses. For admission to the Architecture course, the students have to submit the NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture)scores. The admissions in the M.Tech courses of the IIT Roorkee are based on the scores gained by the students in the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering)exam. Admission to the Postgraduate programs in fundamental sciences is made based on IIT-JAM, and admissions to MBA are made through the CAT exam. IIT Roorkee currently has 23 academic departments that together offer more than 65 courses leading to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees. Along with a few integrated and dual degree courses in the fields of Engineering, Science, Architecture, Management, and Social Sciences. Two new postgraduate programmes (PGP) have just been launched at IIT Roorkee, namely the Masters in Design (Industrial Design) and the Masters in Innovation Management. In addition, IITR has begun two online certificate programmes in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

IIT Roorkee Admission Procedure
- Students need to enrol in the respective entrance exams JEE Main and JEE Advanced for Btech. And GATE for Post Graduate.
- Students then need to check for ranks and scores after the results are declared.
- For securing admission into an IIT like IIT Roorkee, a student needs to secure an AIR i.e. All India Rank.
- Then students have to enroll for any further process say the Joint Seat Allocation process (JoSAA) counselling for Btech.
- Select IIT Roorkee as the institution of study.
- And finally, Secure a provisional letter of IIT Roorkee admission.

IIT Roorkee Placements 2024: The 2024 Phase 1 has been completed. Databricks, a US-based software startup, offered a student over ₹2.05 crore as the Highest Package for an international role. According to media sources, students received 802 offers from 172 recruiters during the first 15 days. Till now, IIT Roorkee has received 23 international offers. Accenture Japan, American Express, Google, Microsoft, Qualcomm India, and other prominent recruiters participated in the placements.
According to media sources, the Highest Package provided at the IIT Roorkee Placements 2023 was INR 1.06 CPA (International)/ INR 1.30 CPA (Domestic). Best college of North India
Placement: The minimum percentage of placements in each branch is 70%. My senior got placed in the foreign country, and the internships are far better than the other colleges. Some of my seniors did their internship in
Schlumberger, Samsung, Goldman Sachs, R&D, and much more companies.The placements are very good. The average salary is 15 lakhs per annum. Various high profiles and big companies like Cisco, Microsoft, Intel, etc. recruit here. Highest package for this year is from Microsoft which is about 1.3 crores& lowest package is 15 Lacs per annum.
Faculty: The professors are highly qualified, but there is a gap between teacher and students due to a large number of student in a class. Besides this, the college has a good method of providing 1 teaching assessment for 15 students. The lab is done on a regular basis. The quality of professors is truly high.
College: IIT Roorkee is the One of the oldest institutes of India established in 1847 but it is still prestigious.The college campus contains all the basic things which are required. Labs are well maintained and highly superior. Besides these, the college has various labs such as Thinking Lab in search of something innovative from the student. Hostels are well maintained, and lecture hall department has big classes. Besides these, IITR is famous for James Thomson building.The admission process is based on jee mains entrance examination.

Dream college for IITian
Placement: Placement is almost 100 percent for students. Highest salary goes upto 80 LPA and average salary is around 10LPA
Faculty: Excellent teachers
College: IIT Roorkee one of the most loved college by any aspiring IITian. I was lucky to get admission in this college. Besides having excellent placement statistics college offers a lot more to the students and help them in their overall growth.
