About All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi

Last Updated By: Shubh Sood on 13th July, 2022

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIIMS), New Delhi is easily one of the most prestigious and sought-after universities in the capital, if not the country. It was established in the year 1956 as an Institution of National Importance by an Act of Parliament. It has secured 1st rank in the NIRF rankings in the medical category four times in a row, from the year 2018-21. It has continued to provide a highly effective combination of theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of medicine, and has given the country some of its most popular and finest doctors. There are 15 branches of this prestigious university in our country at present, situated in Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh, Bhopal, etc. AIIMS Delhi is the first of all these and was established under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and governance of the AIIMS Act, 1956.

This university is duly recognised by the UGC and the Medical Council of India. It offers about 92 courses in over 43 disciplines and multiple specialisations such as medical and paramedical degress and distinctions over 9 UG and PG degrees and doctoral programs. MBBS continues to be arguably the best and most popular course offered by the university. The program offers a mere 125 seats, and students must clear the NEET examination to secure admission. The fees for the program is just 1628 INR per year.

AIIMS Delhi holds two patents, one of which is for 'Sealbio: a revolutionary non-obturation regenerative approach of endodontic treatment.' Another patent application has been filed for a 'Method for automatic recognition of anatomical landmarks in volumetric data.' AIIM Delhi created the Centre for Integrative Medicine and Research (CIMR) in 2016 to foster the convergence of modern medicine with India's ancient and traditional medicinal practises.

The main campus of AIIMS New Delhi is in Ansari Nagar, Delhi. It is located near the South Extension-II market and on both sides of the Sir Aurobindo Marg, south of the AIIMS Roundabout flyover crossing.

The AIIMS Main Campus is divided into five sections:

  1. East Campus: OPD Block, Main Hospital Block, Ward Block, Medical College, Research Section, Convergence Block, BB Dixit Library, Administrative Wing, Undergraduate Hostels, Central Lawn, Jawaharlal Auditorium, and Staff Quarters. This East Campus also houses the 4 Specialty Centers for Cardiothoracic + Neurosciences, Cancer Center, Center for Ophthalmic Sciences, and Center for Dental Education and Research.
  2. West Campus consists primarily of staff quarters and residences.
  3. JPNA Trauma Center - This facility is solely dedicated to emergency services. A tunnel + ramp-road link between East campus and JPNA Trauma Center Campus was also opened in June 2018. This link route is extremely useful for quickly transferring critical patients between the two campuses. Aside from the JPNA Trauma Center, a new 100-bed Plastic and Burns Surgical Unit Hospital is also open, as well as a Skin Bank for Burns Injuries.
  4. Masjid Moth Campus - This location is home to new Post-Graduate and Resident Doctor's apartments. There is also an underground parking garage here. A new OPD block, a mother and child care unit, a surgical block, and a geriatric block are also being built here. These new blocks are intended to reduce the patient load on the current OPD block in East Campus, which is currently being overhauled by approximately 10,000 out-patients per day.
  5. Ayurvigyan Nagar Campus - It is also used for faculty and staff housing.

Scholarships

Due to the exceptionally low price structure, students studying various degrees at AIIMS might be recognised for financial assistance regardless of their category. However, the institute provides merit-based scholarships to its students. Aside from that, students can apply for several state and federal government scholarships before satisfying the eligibility requirements established by the authorities. Given the low fee structure of the courses, not many students need scholarships.
