What is IES ?

UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) conducts Engineering Services Exam (ESE) every year which is also popularly known as IES (Indian Engineering Services) to recruit engineers for the post of Group- ‘A' Officers who work under various departments of the Government of India. The various departments are:

  • India Railways
  • Department of Telecommunication
  • Defence Service of Engineers
  • PWD (Public Work Division)
  • Power
  • Central Water Engineering

Indian Engineering Services Examination conducted by UPSC to recruit the Engineers in the following four specializations:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering

The Exam consists of a written test and a personal interview. The written exam is divided into two parts

  • Preliminary Examination: It is further subdivided into two parts Part – I & Part II, both are Objective type exams.
  • Mains Examination: It is further subdivided into two parts Part – I & Part II, both are conventional type exams.

Based on the specialization, the nature of the work assigned to the recruited Engineers.

IES 2020 Eligibility

Candidates can check the IES eligibility criteria as given below:

1.       Educational Qualification:

  • The candidate should have a bachelor's degree in engineering either B.E or B. Tech. from a recognized University or an Institution.

Application Fees

The IES Application Fee is Rs. 200/- for General/OBC category candidates while all other category candidates (SC/ST/PH) including Female Candidates are exempted from the Application Fee.

The Payment of Application fee can be done online after completing the UPSC IES Online Application Form. There are various payment modes available on the website. You can make payment using Credit Card, Debit Card, the Internet Banking etc. You can also make the payment at your nearest State Bank of India Branch using Pay-in-Slip.

Note the UPSC IES Application Fees as detailed below:

  • For Candidates belonging to General/OBC Category - INR 200 /-
  • For All Female Candidates and Candidates belonging to SC/ST & PH Category -  No Fees

IES 2020 Admit Card

Admit cards will be released by UPSC only for the candidates who have filled their IES Application Form successfully. UPSC will release the IES admit cards for the eligible candidates in December 2017 for the IES Preliminary Examination.

Admit cards for the Mains examination are expected to be released in June 2018. The admit cards for the IES Mains Exam will only be released for the candidates who will pass the pre exam successfully... Read more

IES 2020 Exam Pattern

The IES Exam Paper can be split into three major stages. The first stage is IES Preliminary Exam, the Second stage is IES Mains Exam and the Third stage is Personality Test/Personal Interview. IES Aspirants need to clear all the three stage to become an IES.

Based on the subjects, IES Pre Exam again divided into 2 Papers, Paper I and Paper II

IES Cut-Offs

As there are 3 steps to clear the exam, every stage has a cut off to enter into the next step. A candidate needs to clear all the 3 steps individually to select as an IES Officer.  If a candidate fails to clear the IES Pre Exam, He/She will not be permitted to write the IES Main Exam. To clear each of the 3 steps, the commission decides a cut-off, on the basis of the IES Cutoff list the candidate promoted to the next step. IES 2020 Selection Procedure

IES 2018 Selection Procedure is based on the performance of all the three stages. The candidate who clears all the three stages will be selected as IES. The candidate who clears the first stage (Pre Exam) will be proceeding to the second stage which is the Mains Exam. UPSC recruits an estimated of 500 engineers through IES Exam every Year. The expected number of vacancies is 500 in all the branches including the PH candidates. The selected candidates are posted as Group A, Group B officers in different sectors of different branches.
