MAT Score vs Percentile 2023

The MAT exam is given in a variety of modes, slots, and days. Each test's question paper differs from the last. As a result, one exam session may be more difficult than another, or vice versa. MAT scores are adjusted during the scaling process to compensate for this. MAT scores are scaled on the same level to ensure that every candidate's MAT result represents the same level of ability regardless of the mode or date of the exam.

  • Marks obtained in the Indian & Global Environment section are not considered when calculating the MAT Composite Score and MAT Percentile.
  • The composite score and the scaled score for the first four sections are based on the performance of applicants who took the test in 1996.
  • In 1996, it was determined that a MAT score of approximately 50 points in a section and approximately 500 points on a composite scale represented the average performance of the given group.

What is MAT Exam 2023?

The Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a national level entrance exam for admission to MBA/PGDM programs at various B-schools in India. It is administered by AIMA (All India Management Association) in three modes: PBT, CBT, and IBT, and candidates can select the MAT Exam mode that is most convenient for them.

MAT Marking Scheme

The MAT marking scheme is as follows:

  • Each correct answer earns one point.
  • Penalty of 0.25 marks for each incorrect answer
  • The overall scaled score is 800.

What is MAT Score?

The MAT score, also called the MAT composite score, is the total you get from the first four sections of the exam. These sections test skills that are important for management jobs. Here's how the MAT composite score is calculated, according to AIMA:

The MAT composite score can range from 199 to 801. It's very rare to get a score below 200 or above 800.

  • Scores below 20 or above 80 for individual sections are also uncommon.
  • If your score is below 200, it's counted as 199. If your score is above 800, it's counted as 801. This means even if you score less than 199, your composite score will be 199. Similarly, if you score more than 801, your composite score will be 801.

What is MAT Scaled Score?

A scaled score shows how many questions you answered correctly (raw score), but it's changed to be on a fair and standard scale. In MAT, each section's score is changed to fit a range of 0 to 100. So, your scorecard will have a scaled score between 0 and 100 for each section.

Calculation of MAT Scaled Scores 2023

The numbers you see in the MAT scorecard for each section are the scaled scores, which are calculated based on how well a student did in each part of the MAT 2023 exam. This is how you can understand what a scaled score means in MAT.

  • In every section, there are 40 questions, each worth 1 mark. This makes the highest possible raw score for each section in the MAT 2023 exam 40.
  • The raw scores a student gets in the MAT exam are changed to fit a range from 0 to 100.
  • Because MAT is held 4 times a year, the scaled scores are adjusted to make up for any differences in how difficult the exams might be.
  • Scaled scores show a student's skill and performance in the MAT exam compared to other students' scores.
  • Even though the Indian and Global Environment section's scaled score is shown in the MAT score report, it doesn't count when figuring out a student's total composite score or percentile in the MAT exam.
  • AIMA says that scores below 20 and above 80 in the MAT exam are not very common.
  • Once you've calculated the MAT composite score, it's easy to figure out the corresponding percentile.

What is MAT Composite Score?

MAT composite score is a representation of the marks derived from performance in the first four sections of the exam. The subsequent points provided by AIMA help explain how the MAT composite score is calculated.

  • The MAT composite score is presented on a scale ranging from 199 to 801. It's unusual to find a MAT exam result with a composite score below 200 or exceeding 800.
  • Sectional MAT scores below 20 or above 80 are infrequent.
  • Any scores below 200 are recorded as 199, and any scores above 800 are noted as 801. This means that even if students obtain a score lower than 199, their composite score will be shown as 199. Similarly, for MAT scores surpassing 801, the score will be displayed as 801.

What is MAT Percentile?

This MAT percentile can be defined as the percentage of all students who scored lower than one student based on the entire examination administration. The percentile indicates the number of students who scored lower than a specific student on the MAT exam. Some B-schools that accept MAT scores offer admission based on composite scores, while the rest base student selection on MAT percentile.

Candidates are frequently perplexed by the terms percentage and percentile. In this regard, the question of "How do you convert a MAT score to a percentage?" becomes important. The following formula can be used to convert a MAT Score into a percentage:

How to Calculate MAT Percentile?

MAT Percentile = (Composite Score obtained by a Candidate)X 100

Total number of candidates

Percentile shows the number of students who scored less than a particular student in the MAT exam.

Percentage = (Marks of candidates/Total marks) x 100

Besides, MAT scores, many MBA colleges select students on the basis of group discussion (GD), personal interview (PI), and written ability test (WAT).
