The Supreme Court of India quashed Madras High Court directive to CBSE to grant additional grace marks to the students who suffered due to wrong Tamil translation of 49 questions in NEET 2018 examination. The Madras High Court earlier directed the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to grant 196 marks to the Under Graduate Medical aspirant of the state who appeared for NEET exam in the month of May.
The Supreme Court judgement stated, “The method adopted by the High Court is manifestly arbitrary and unjustified and cannot be sustained.”
SC also observed that the court did not make any attempt to check whether the candidates who took the examination in Tamil, attempted answer for those 49 questions or not. The apex court also notified that according to the affidavit signed by Dr. Vikas Gupta (Director of National Testing Agency), NEET 2019 will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the bilingual examination will be conducted after the NEET Question paper is translated.
The Madras High Court directed CBSE on July 10, 2018, to grant additional marks to the students who wrote NEET in the Tamil Language.
NEET 2018 was conducted on May 7, 2018, across the country for admission in Under Graduate medical courses offered by the government and private institutes and colleges. Nearly 1.3 million candidates appeared for the examination and later complaints were filed against the wrong translation in the Tamil language NEET Question Paper.
NEET 2019 is scheduled to be conducted on May 5, 2019, by the newly formed National Testing Agency. The online application process for NEET has already commenced on the official website of NTA and the last date to apply for the same is November 30, 2018.
