NEET 2019: Over 15 Lakh students registered for the exam

By: Sakshi Awasthi on Apr 22, 2023

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, known as NEET 2019 is scheduled to be conducted on May 5, 2019. The online application process of NEET ended on December 7, 2018, and over 15 lakh candidates applied for NEET 2019 this year. For the year 2018, nearly 13 lakh aspirants registered for the examination. The significant rise in the number of applicants is due to the hope that nearly 20 percent more MBBS seats will be offered from the upcoming academic year.

NEET

Earlier NEET was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) but from the academic year 2019, the national-level medical examination will be conducted by the newly formed National Testing Agency (NTA). NTA is a specialized body which has been constituted by the union government to conduct various national-level competitive and entrance examinations.

According to the officials of medical education division from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the sudden increase in the number of applicants is due to the fact that the number of operational medical colleges is going up in 2019.

Until the academic year 2018, there were 60 thousand medical seats with 30 thousand each for the government and private colleges and institutes. The number is likely to be 70 to 72 thousand for the academic year 2019.

An official of medical education division said, “Various states, like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and some southern and north-eastern states, will see about 12-14 more new colleges getting operational from the next academic session, which means there would be more options for MBBS aspirants.”

He also mentioned, “In most states the new medical colleges are coming up through special arrangements between state governments and private sector which means that infrastructure is provided by the states but the teaching and operations of medical colleges is taken care of by the private players.” He also said that in some cases the state government is offering various incentives to private players to establish medical colleges in rural and urban areas.
