NEET 2019: Political leader asking exempt Tamilnadu from the exam

By: Archana on October 05, 2018

In a recent statement given by DMK leader requested centre to put down the national level medical examination NEET UG from Tamilnadu. It is not even a month that NTA has released an official notification regarding the registration process started and the request to call it off in the state has been made to the centre.  M.K Stalin pointing out the 49 translation mistakes in the previous year paper said that “it impacts the rural students of the state and step-motherly treatment to vernacular languages.”

request to exempt neet 2019 in Tamilnadu In support of his statement, Stalin further added that the students in TN are certainly being affected by the examination which is although being conducted in the local language but at the same time there are cases where if any discrepancy arises the details given in English language paper will be considered as final. Last year this particular translation issue arises where 49 translation errors were observed in the question paper which affected the scores of 24,000 aspirants opting for the local language paper. Candidates had to lose the 196 marks straight out of 720 total marks.

The party leader further claimed that “The students are shying from taking NEET examination in regional languages. Whereas 90.75% of students took the exam in English and Hindi in the year 2017, the number increased to 91.82% in 2018. The step-motherly treatment meted out to regional languages is detrimental to student's performances.”

The point being highlighted for the sake of students belonging to rural areas of the state as they are the one being most affected because of choosing regional language as their education medium. As the students were riddled with the error occurred in the translation of the question paper and leading to a state of confusion affected their final performance. Talking about the pass percentage of all the other states, it is seen that Rajasthan has 74% pass percentage followed with Andhra Pradesh with 73%, Telangana having 69% pass percentage, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with 60% each.  However, TN pass percentage was just 39.56%.

Since the introduction into the Tamilnadu NEET has stayed an issue over which there is continuing disagreement. Like in the year 2017 there was a prolonged tussle going on between governments and conducting body which left students in dilemma until the very last moment. In that particular year the pass percentage where just 38.84%, which is just 0.72% of improvement in the results and stipulated to be higher if there would have not been a translation issue.

In the start of the year, government, however, has assured that the translation errors will be taken care at utmost priority and also students will be allotted an examination centre near to their preferred locations only. It is important to note that in the case of discrepancy the rule to refer to the English language will prevail.
