KCET likely to be held again over out-of-syllabus questions

The Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) is expected to be rescheduled due to the appearance of out-of-syllabus questions in all subjects during the exam conducted on April 18 and April 19, causing distress among students.

The expert committees appointed by the state government to review the KCET question papers have affirmed the concerns raised by students, teachers, and other stakeholders regarding the presence of out-of-syllabus questions. Sources from the higher education department.

Sources from the higher education department have confirmed that on Thursday, expert committees submitted their reports, validating the presence of out-of-syllabus questions in all four subjects.

The reports also indicated that each subject contained out-of-syllabus questions for at least eight marks. According to the norms of pre-university education, a maximum of six grace marks could be awarded in any subject under the Karnataka Education Act 1983. Even in the case of KCET.

A subject expert who was part of the committee affirmed that "everything is publicly available, and that is indeed accurate." The expert stated unequivocally, "There is no doubt about the presence of out-of-syllabus questions in the question papers."

Taking all factors into account, the department is leaning towards prioritizing a re-examination," stated an official source.

Discussing the various options, the source mentioned that some suggested calculating scores only for questions within the syllabus. However, this approach might prompt students to resort to legal action, potentially delaying the entire process.

Given that students are currently preparing for other competitive exams like NEET, retaking the KCET wouldn't pose significant difficulty for them.

The Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), responsible for conducting the KCET, received approximately 4,000 objections this time, with the objection deadline ending on Saturday. Allegedly, there were over 51 out-of-syllabus questions across all four KCET subjects. Before forming the expert committees, Chief Secretary Rajneesh Goel consulted the director of the Pre-University Education department and obtained...
