NDA & NA exam which is conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) is a competitive Exam for the selection in the India's most prestigious institutions, the National Defence Academy. In NDA, the selected candidates are prepared to get inducted into the Indian Armed Forces like Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.

What is National Defence Academy?

  • The students who have passed the 10+2 exam with a specified percentage criteria are allowed to sit for the UPSC NDA & NA exam. The candidates who clear the written exam are called for the SSB (Service Selection Board). The final merit is formed by combining the marks of NDA written exam and SSB test. 
  • The National Defence Academy is a Joint Services Academy which is headed by the Commandant which is a very senior officer of the Indian Armed Forces. The Commandant can be from the Army, Navy or Airforce. 
  • The National Defence Academy is situated at Khadakwasla near Pune City, Maharashtra. 
  • NDA is the 1st tri-service academy in the world and it is spread over 7,015 acres of land. NDA was established in the year 1954. 
  • At the NDA, the cadets undergo 3 years of training where they are given the academic and technical training of the finest quality to equip the cadets with appropriate qualifications that are necessary for them in their career services. 
  • The cadets have to achieve the physical endurance standards and proficiency in the troop games as a part of the curriculum. 
  • Before a cadet passes out from the NDA, the cadet has to pass all the exams pertaining to academic and physical test.
  • After passing out of the NDA, the cadet is sent to pre-commissioned training for 1 year at IMA (for Army) or Indian Naval Academy (for Navy) and Air Force Academy (for Airforce).

NDA 2018 Application Procedure

NDA Application Form can be filled in an online mode on the official website of NDA. The candidates would be required to fill in their personal details, their academic qualifications along with their detailed work experience in addition to uploading their photograph and signature.

The Application Procedure, in brief, is as explained below:

  1. The official website would need to be visited.
  2. The Part 1 of the Registration Procedure would be required to be done by the candidate.
  3. Once the required details are submitted, Registration ID would be generated.
  4. The Registration ID would be required to be noted by the candidate for future use.
  5. The candidate can make the payment using the online or offline method.
  6. The scanned image of photograph and signature would be required to be uploaded.
  7. The Declaration Form should be filled and the candidate must click on "I Agree" option.

Application Fees

UPSC charges a minimal fee for the NDA Online Application and Registration. Here are the details of the NDA Application Form Fee:

The candidates have to pay the NDA exam fee through Online mode. No offline fee payment is allowed under any circumstances.

GEN/OBC candidates fee: Rs. 100

UPSC charges no fee from SC/ST candidates.

NDA 2018 Admit Card

NDA Admit Cards are released well in advance by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). Admit Card is an important document that needs to be there with the candidate at the time of the Examination. Without NDA Admit Card, the candidate can't give the exam.

  • The students who complete the NDA Application Process have issued the Hall Tickets mentioning the Examination Center. 
  • The candidates can download the NDA Admit card at the official site of UPSC by entering the Registration Number and Date of Birth of the candidate.

NDA 2018 Exam Pattern

NDA exam pattern is a well-defined pattern by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). The NDA Examination pattern is set in such a way so that the required standards of the National Defence Academy can be fulfilled. NDA 2018 Syllabus

The NDA Syllabus composes of two parts - Mathematics and General Ability. The General Ability consists of a lot of questions from English, General Knowledge, Chemistry, Physics and General Science. Candidates can prepare for the same from the topics mentioned under Syllabus for NDA Exam.

The features of the NDA exam are as explained as follows:

  1. Both NDA 1 and 2 consist of two papers first being Mathematics and the second General Ability Test.
  2. The Mathematics section is marked for a total of 300 and is designed to have MCQs relating to Grade 10, 11 and 12.
  3. General Ability Section has two parts - One English marked 200 and the other General Knowledge marked for 400.
  4. The Paper would be Multiple Choice Based where the candidates would have to choose the right option.
  5. Marks for the interview would be set for 900.

NDA 2017 Question Paper Analysis

NDA Previous Year Analysis would help candidates know the mode of preparation for the exam and the pattern of questioning. Candidates would require scoring a minimum 600 marks on 900 to get selected for the further stages in the NDA Selection Procedure.

Questions in the Mathematics section were answered from topics like Calculus, Trigonometry, Matrices, Determinants and Probability. The Maths section was known to be moderately difficult.

Questions were asked from Reading Comprehension and Grammar while this section was known to be tougher than the previous year.

The candidates who would be qualifying the written examination would be called for an interview for the next level of NDA Examination.

NDA Cut-Offs

UPSC NDA Examination is usually held twice a year by which is written by about 3 Lakh candidates all over India. Selection of the candidates shall be done on the basis of the Written Examination and an interview. All the selected candidates later would join the Indian Defence Academy. UPSC would not be publishing any cutoff marks for written examination, but the final cutoff of written examination plus interview marks would be published. 

The list of candidates who have qualified Navy, Army and Air Force would be published. The Cutoff marks over the past years of NDA I and II have been mentioned as below:
