On June 22, the prelims exam results for IAS 2022 were made available online. The IAS prelims results were compiled and released by UPSC in about fifteen days. On June 5, an offline exam for the IAS prelims of 2022 was administered in two shifts. The roll number of the qualified applicants in the Civil Service result 2022 pdf was made public by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Here is where candidates can view their results. The Detailed Application Form (DAF-I) for qualifying candidates will shortly be made available by UPSC. The final day to send the DAF-I separately will be announced by UPSC in a formal notice. The IAS Main (written) Exam will be held from September 16 to September 25. ( on weekends only).

UPSC CSE (Civil Services Examination) which is also famously known as Indian Administrative Service (IAS) exam, is a nationwide competitive exam in India which is conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) for the recruitment to various Civil Services posts. Civil Services are considered as the backbone of the Governing Structure of India. Civil Service officers are the All India Service Officers or Central Government Class 1 gazetted officers who are recruited for the coveted positions under various departments of the Government.

Civil Services Types:

Civil services are categorized into three types-

  1. All India Services
  2. Group A Services
  3. Group B Services

All India Services-

All India Services are the cadre based services which include IAS (Indian Administrative Service), IPS (Indian Police Service) and IFoS (Indian Forest Services). Only IAS and IPS All India Services are allocated to the candidates selected in the final merit list while IFoS is conducted separately under UPSC except for its preliminary paper which is merged with Civil Services Prelims paper.

Group A Services-

Group A services are the elite services of the Government of India which includes Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), Indian Postal Service (IPoS), Indian Audits & Accounts Service (IA&AS) and others.

Group B Services-

Group B Services includes some central services like Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Services, Defence Secretariat Services and other as well as some state services like District Employment Officer, Excise and Taxation Officer, Block Development Officer and others.

The allotment of the services is based on the merit and choice of service opted by the selected candidate.

Roles and Responsibilities of Civil servants:

The posts allocated to the selected candidates under civil services are high authority posts. The nature of the Jobs of all the services under UPSC is different but commonly leads to the Nation Development. The role and responsibilities the officers of Civil Services are mentioned below-

Responsibilities and Power of IAS (Indian Administrative Services)-

  • Selected candidates in IAS are sent for foundation course and professional training at LBSNAA (Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration). In LBSNAA, the trainees are taught about Public Administration, Governance, Ethics, Code of Conduct, etc. and are exposed to various personality development programs including Sports, Bharat Darshan, Cultural Activities, Workshops, etc.
  • After the training, the trainees are allocated the Zone cadres (state cadre before policy change). The trainee is sent to the district of allocated cadre where the trainee learns about the practical aspects of the District Administration. After the completion of the District training, the trainee becomes an officer and is given the post of SDM (Sub-Divisional Magistrate). The major responsibilities of an SDM are to look after the administration of the sub-division, law and order and collection of land revenue.
  • After two years of service as an SDM, the person is promoted to DM or District Collector. The major responsibilities remain the same, but the area of operation widens. The DM has the power to impose Section 144 (Curfew) of the Criminal Procedure Code under riot like situation. 
  • Apart from the post of DM, an IAS officer is given various other designations in other departments of the state government like Revenue department, Development Authority, Municipal corporation, Dairy, Housing Board, Ayurveda, Medical Department, etc. An IAS officer is also given the Central Deputation posting as per the service rules.
  • An IAS officer can reach to the post of Chief Secretary of State or Chief Secretary of India, which is the topmost bureaucratic post in India.

Responsibilities and Power of Indian Police Service (IPS)-

  • From taking care of the law and order situation in a District to the big National Security related issues, an IPS officer holds the responsibility of all the matters. 
  • After completing the foundational course at LBSNAA, the IPS trainees are sent to the Indian Police Academy, Hyderabad where they are exposed to physical training and the training related to policing and laws. 
  • IPS is a uniformed job and an IPS officer is easily recognized by the general public.
  • An IPS officer is given SDPO (Sub-Divisional Police Officer) rank initially and after two years, the SDPO is promoted to S.P (Superintendent of Police) or DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police).
  • The responsibility of the S.P is to hold law and order of the District. In case of an emergency like a riot, the District S.P is assisted by Central Armed Police Force and the Indian Army. 
  • An IPS officer can reach to the post of DGP (Director General of Police) which is the top cop of the state. The top rank in IPS in India is held by the Director of Intelligence Bureau.
  • IPS Officers are also deputed at the central agencies like BSF, CRPF, CISF, Intelligence Bureau, CBI, RAW and much more.

Responsibilities and Power of Indian Foreign Service (IFS)-

  • With time, the relevance of Indian Foreign Services has increased. India has increased its presence at a global platform. IFS officers hold the responsibility to handle the diplomacy in favor of India with other countries.
  • IFS officers are posted to the Embassy and consulates in the countries which have the diplomatic relations with India. 
  • An IFS officer starts the career with the post of Under Secretary and can reach to the post of Foreign Secretary of India. 
  • An IFS Officer handles the work at the consulate on the Problems related to the Indian Diaspora, Economic sector, Political sector and other diplomatic sectors.
