SSC CGL: Demand for Normalization

By: R Chandrakala on Sep 25, 2017

Students who appeared in the SSC CGL Tier 1 are of the demand that scores of the test should be normalized. The difficulty level of the tests apparently increased after August 16. About 15 Lakh candidates appeared in the exam which was conducted in 43 batches all over the country. The examination was held from August 5 to August 23 while the results are expected to come around October 31.

A campaign by a student has been started on Facebook where other students are also being seen demanding normalization of their scores. Once the answer key was released, an analysis of the same had happened across candidates wherein they came to the conclusion that the questions were difficult for candidates who appeared in the exam after August 16th.

A plan is being made to file a case in the Central Administrative Tribunal, a body that has been established for resolving disputes relating to recruitment exams. A difference as much as of 1 mark would be highly significant given the amount of competition existing among the SSC CGL Candidates.

Exams being held in a single shift across various students was easier as against the current form of arrangement. With the electronic system in place, the exam convening authority to determine the root of the statistical data available and implement the process of normalization.

Lakhs of students every year look forward to obtaining a Government job and because of such disparities, the basis of the selection procedure is not justified. An exam conducted across various slots with varying difficulty levels would usually undertake the normalization procedure.

The Normalization procedure is usually based on certain parameters set by the authority and a formula to derive scores on the basis of the set parameters which would then in the order of highest to lowest determine the selection of deserving candidates.

For calculation of normalization scores means across various shifts are computed and set on an equal scale to ensure comparison happens on the right level.
