What is KVPY ?

The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a Scholarship program conducted by IISc Bangalore. This year KVPY exam is on 5th November. It offers scholarship and contingency grants up to the pre-Ph.D. level to selected students. It was first started in 1999.It is funded by Department of Science and to encourage students to take up fellowship program in basic sciences.

"The advertisement related to the KVPY Scholarship appears in all the newspaper commonly on the 11th May which is also known a technology day and the Second Sunday of July once a year."

The talented students having an aptitude for research apply for this fellowship. They can thus contribute towards research and development in the country.

The KVPY eligibility is candidates of Indian origin studying in 11th standard to the first year of any basic science program can apply for this program. IISc conducts the aptitude test across various KVPY test centres'.

There are three streams in KVPY; SA, SB, SX.

  1. SA stream: For the students studying Science stream in 11th standard.
  2. SX stream: For the students studying Science stream in 12th standard.
  3. SB stream: For the students studying Science stream in the 1st year of graduation.

Candidates are called for an interview based on the aptitude test result which is the last stage of KVPY selection procedure. To attain scholarship candidate has clear both aptitude test and interview.

Following is the weight-age:

  • Aptitude Test  – 75%  
  • Interview marks in the streams SA, SB and SX - 25%

Fellowship details of KVPY:

The Fellow continues to study Basic Science courses in school/junior college/university, and maintains a minimum level of academic performance of first class or 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate or equivalent grade points and the students has to necessarily pass all the subjects prescribed for that particular academic year.

Around 1 lakh students appeared for the examination last year out of which 881 students of 11th standard, 1554 students of 12th standard and 96 students of graduation were given KVPY scholarship.

This aptitude exam is conducted in English and Hindi across all the test centres. Students can download KVPY admit card from official website from the second week of October 2017.

However the application form needs to fill in online mode only, the application fee of the exam is INR 1000 for general category students and INR 500 for students belonging to SC/ST/OBC.

Candidates should read the instruction carefully while filling the KVPY application procedure.

KVPY 2018 Eligibility

All the candidates applying for the KVPY fellowship program need to fulfil the eligibility criteria mentioned by conducting authority IISc Bangalore, they must check the eligibility criteria properly.

The scholarship is granted in three streams; SA, SB, SX.

  • SA stream: For the students studying Science stream in 11th standard.
  • SX stream: For the students studying Science stream in 12th standard.
  • SB stream: For the students studying Science stream in the 1st year of graduation.

Candidates pursuing an undergraduate degree in Basic Sciences such as B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. in different science subjects are only eligible to apply

The eligibility for all the streams is different and is given below:

SA Stream: Candidates having 75% marks in maths and science subject in class 10th

SX Stream: Candidates having minimum of 60% in qualifying exam and 75% marks in maths and science subject in class 10th

SB Stream: Candidates having a minimum of 60% in Class 12th and minimum 60% marks in the first year of graduation course.

Given below are the application procedure of KVPY:

Candidates need to fill all the personal and academic details properly. Along with this candidates need to upload the photograph, signature as applicable.

3. Fee payment

There  are 2 modes of fees payment:

  1. By using a credit card/ATM-Debit card/Net Banking or
  2. By downloading and e-challan from the application portal.

The application fee for KVPY-2017 are as follows:

For General Category/OBC: Rs. 1000

For SC/ST/PWD: Rs. 500

KVPY 2018 Study Material

Candidates should have a clear concept of the entire concept related to 10th standard subject which includes Biology

Given below are the required topics in each subject which will help in preparing for the exam:

Physics: For Physics the best book is H.C. Verma the language is simple. One should study the topics like Electrostatics, Magnetism, Gravitation, Optics.

Chemistry: For chemistry, the 12th standard NCERT book is good enough to prepare. You can also refer to the class notes and Modern abc of chemistry book also.

Mathematics: There are various books available for practising Math like R.D Sharma. Students must have theoretical knowledge also. You can also refer to the sample paper provided by the various publications. Candidates can give emphasis on topics like Functions, relations, quadratic equations, Series and progressions, P.C. and probability.

Biology: You can refer to all the NCERT books of class 9th,10th along with this you can also refer Trueman's Elementary Biology – Vol. 1 for Class XI with Solved Value Based Questions.

KVPY 2018 Selection Procedure

The first stage of the selection procedure is Aptitude test which is going to take place on 5th Nov 2017. The exam is conducted in major cities in India. It will be conducted in both English and Hindi language. All the question will be in Multiple choice formats.

Answers keys will be available online after 4-5 days just after the exam is been conducted
