Saket Pachisia MBA / PGDM [Business Management ]  Student

XLcesior “The XL culture can only be experienced and cannot be explained” These words straight from our dean's mouth are the most apt description for life at XLRI. In this article I'll try to 'tangibilise' Life at XLRI has been a roller coaster ride. Right from Day 1, every new day is like an adventure to seek, a new road to tread upon and a new quest to be conquered. The thing that strikes any individual first is the humility that is ingrained in our very system. Despite the myriad backgrounds that each individual comes from, XLRI offers equal opportunity to all, and consequently, builds in us a sense of respect and humility in every person. Studying in the best private business school institution ensures that everyone has a stellar profile, and that brings out the competitive streak in us. That however, is merely a streak; not the all-pervading aspect of ever XLRI student, because in the face of opposition, we know we have hands that will hold us steady and act as shoulders to rely on. Take our seniors, for example. They are there to help us even the day before their exams. They've conducted multiple sessions to inform us and Nothing can be more uplifting than this motivation we can constantly depend on. The beauty of this motivation is that it is not served to us in doses only when called upon, but it is a constant verve that is synchronized to our heartbeat. The raw passion that every XLRI student has is self-evident and is the driving force of this institute. One only needs to look at this brief chronology of what has transpired in the past week to get a glimpse of the passion that drives this premier B-school. The first week is an orientation week of all sorts. The entire community is actively involved to smooth en the process of transitioning to a new environment, to ensure that at the end, we feel we're part of a big family.Needless to say, life out here is hectic, but fulfilling. The first week saw a mix of orientation, sessions on subjects, overnight marketing competition (Maxi), getting to know half of the senior and junior batch and most importantly, ourselves. From second week onward sleep becomes a prized resource. In fact the host of activities ensure we are still going strong 4 am in the morning. The mix of surprise quizzes, assignments, case study competitions, committee selections, interest group participation, sports etc ensures that there's always something for everyone. Taking an evening stroll in the hallowed portals at 3 am, unleashing the photographer in us , engaging in um covalent bond matching, or having a legendary bite at Bishu Da.The attraction exists outside the campus too! Brubeck’s, the Tata Zoo, the Bistupur Market area etc. teaches us to find joy in little things. Coming to the third week well there's a conundrum between skipping that breakfast, attending an early morning class, deciding on assignment submission, or simply not leaving my bed at all! Multitasking reaches a new level when committee selection, group task, case studies and various other assignments need to be completed in the same time window. That's what the first month (nearly) at XLRI is about. Did I mention previously that birthday nights and other XL traditions are best when experienced? Trial by fire takes place (quite literally!) for the uninitiated.  Moreover, XLRI guarantees that we learn the best of the Indian traditions. While interacting with mini India we learn about the best of the Indian culture more than what we have in our entire life! P.S. The rest will only be disclosed if you arrive here on campus ;-)!! The warmth of the entire fraternity ensures the aptness of the title "Home away from home". What I've learnt so far  is that getting into a premier B-school is not success. It is an opportunity which thousands yearn for but few get. An opportunity which can be life changing for the society in general and an individual in particular. It is only the B-school, and what you choose to take away from it that determines how impactful the change will be.  And I know that being from XLRI means that each one of us is going to be a harbinger of change.

This year we saw a plethora of opportunities for our institution with a record 100% placement within 2.5 days. Some snippets for the same from our official report are – Largest ever batch of 361 students was placed in a record time of 2.5 days – Participation from 95 recruiters (inclusive of 25 new recruiters) – Around 48% of the batch was recruited by the FMCG, BFSI and Consulting firms – The top recruiters on campus in terms of numbers were Accenture Strategy (13), Microsoft (12), HUL (11), Flipkart (10), ABG (9), Citibank (9), Snapdeal (9) and Vodafone (9) – The median stipend increased by ~16% per month International Roles This year saw many international offers in internships. Companies like ABG, HUL, Kellogg’s, and Godrej among others opening up multiple international roles. Many more organizations are bound to get added to the list as they finalize their projects closer to the internship period. Carlyle continued to repose its faith in the institution by recruiting exclusively from XLRI. The European Hedge Fund after having offered its only PPO to an XLer returned to campus for the summers. The Sales & Marketing enthusiasts were flooded with offers with the FMCG sector leading the way. HUL offered 11 internship roles, followed by Mondelez at 8 and GSK CH at 7. ITC and Kellogg’s closely followed at 6 each. Roughly 21% of this season’s offers were by FMCG recruiters some of which include Akzonobel, Asian Paints, Britannia, Castrol, Coca-Cola, Colgate Palmolive, GSK CH, Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages, Johnson & Johnson Consumer, L’Oréal, Marico, Mars, Nestlé, Pepsi and Reckitt Benckiser to name a few. With an average of around 5 offers per organization, consulting firms like Accenture Strategy, Aon Hewitt, BCG, Cognizant, Everest Group, EY, Hay Group, KPMG, PwC got a pick of the best talent that XLRI had to offer. Accenture Strategy led this sector with 13 offers followed by The Boston Consulting Group and KPMG offering 7 offers each. All these companies opened their consulting roles for both BM and HRM batch. Conglomerate ABG lead the conglomerate pack with 9 internship offers. The regular Conglomerates offered an average of 6 offers. The Conglomerates who have time and again trusted XLRI for its talent pool include ABG, GE, Godrej, Mahindra, Reliance, RPG and TAS. Technology The Technology Sector showed a strong presence with participation from Industry stalwarts like Microsoft, Samsung R&D Institute (SRI), Wipro, Philips, Whirlpool, IBM, HCL, Siemens, CISCO etc. Microsoft returned for its IDC and Sales and Marketing role along with HR. Healthcare Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories was the new participant this year which also included the regular recruiters like GSK Pharma and Roche with roles across Sales & Marketing, Operations and HR domains. Other Sectors Vodafone continued to fuel its expansion plans in the country with talent from XLRI by taking 9 interns closely followed by Airtel (8) in the Telecom space. E-Commerce and Start-Ups Flipkart, Snapdeal, Quikr and Ola Cabs made their presence felt from the E-Commerce sector. Startups like PharmEasy and Zo Rooms also participated in the summer internship process and together, the e-commerce and startups domain accounted for 8% of the internship offers. Tata Steel, Hero Moto Corp from the manufacturing domain were highly favored among XLers. Star TV, Sony Entertainment, Bennett & Coleman and HT Media recruited from the Media Sector with Star TV leading the way with 7 internship offers. In addition, Shell India and Castrol India from the Oil & Gas Sector and CESC from the Power Sector also recruited talent from XLRI.

Summer Internships , Industry Visits , Company Workshops , Bootcamps etc are some of the ways we students gain industry exposure and the companies offering them have been discussed subsequently .

Admission Difficulty: Hard

Based on School / 12th Class Result, State / National Entrance Exams, Group Discussion / Personal Interview, Video, Essay Writing & General Knowledge

Admission Criteria:I score 99.41 Percentile and it was a dream come through to secure a seat from a non engineering background and as a fresher in one of the crème de la crème institutions of our country. I believe XLRI's focus on inculcating ethics and values while grooming future business leaders is what makes the primary difference. With its state-of-the-art infrastructure, experienced professors, enriching atmosphere, relevant industry exposure and stimulating courses it provides a plethora of opportunities. With the right attitude, any student will take away more than just the tangible which is the cross functional knowledge. I prioritized this college so that I could acquire the intangible knowledge the institute provides- the knowledge born of experience, the skill set and the mind set. Along with this the institute focus on sensitizing we students about the lesser privileged, be it in the form of interacting with villagers, staying with them or donating clothes is what will help to add a different dimension to our character It is this holistic approach along with the passion to strive for overall development and excellence which XLRI will help to inculcate in me and help me in a long way to attain my goals.

An exciting and challenging event in area of finance, Prometheus is the flagship finance event of Ensemble that is organized in coordination with Finance Association at XLRI (FINAX). It is an arena of real time problem solving and high fidelity market simulations. The shrewdest money-managers of the country, screened after multiple rounds, lock horns in the battle for glory as they straddle through varying functions of Portfolio Management, Asset Evaluation, Derivatives and Corporate Finance. The intense battle ensures that only the best shall come out as triumphant and to him will belong the Fire that Prometheus stole from the Gods, not to mention the spoils of the win. After all, as Warren Buffet puts it there are only two rules in finance. Rule No 1: Never lose money. Rule No 2: Never forget Rule No 1

The Marketing Association of XLRI, or MAXI as it fondly known, is the oldest committee on campus. Started over thirty years ago, MAXI's mandate is simple - popularize the field of Marketing at XLRI and ensure that fun and quirkiness is an integral part of the entire process. This is achieved through a mix of competitive events, talks, interaction sessions, conferences and of course, the world-renowned MAXI Fair. It is often said that Marketing is something that needs to be experienced rather than studied, and MAXI uses this as one of its guiding principles. All events conducted by MAXI are designed to give students a deep, working insight into what Marketing is really about. MAXI is possibly the best-known and most respected committee, both within and outside XLRI. This standing is a result of constant innovation - be it in the more famous form of MAXI Fair, or other initiatives like Mindscapes - India's first seminar on the applications of Behavioural Research in Marketing. The flagship Marketing event at Ensemble, the annual XLRI Fest is perhaps the most hands-on Marketing event on the B-school circuit. Intra-college activities like MAXI Bazaar and industry interaction sessions under Perspectives serve to add flavour to the academic courses taught in Marketing and keep the interest and enthusiasm high. An ISO 9001 organisation MAXI is probably the only committee in India to hold a Limca and a Guinness World Record. The committee strives to achieve new heights in marketing, with past achievements including consulting for FMCG giants like HUL, Nestle, ITC and many more at MAXI FAIR. Never one to rest on its past laurels, MAXI continually strives toinnovate and provide the best possible learning experience to the students to maintain XLRI's standing as 'The' destination for Marketing. At MAXI we believe “If you’re a good marketing person, you have to be a little crazy.” and probably that is why we are INSANELY DIFFERENT.
