JEE Main Rank Amendments

As per the notification released by JEE Main last year, three major changes have been introduced by the Ministry of Human Resource & Development:

  1. 12th grade marks would be having no weight in determination of ranks for JEE Main.
  2. For all the examinees to qualify in IIT/NIT/IIIT admissions, based on JEE Main ranks, a minimum of 75% is required to be secured in the 12th board exam; alternatively, the candidate is required to be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th grade exam conducted by the Boards.
  3. For the SC/ST category, a minimum of 65% in the 12th grade exam would be considered as the qualifying marks.

The notification has removed Grade 12 marks as a factor in the determination of ranks, however the eligibility criteria holds. 

What are the basis of preparation of JEE Main rank list?

  • JEE Main ranks are determined on the basis of JEE Main scores. The scores would be arranged on the basis of merit and rank awarded correspondingly.

Understanding the basis of percentile calculation:

  • A percentile is that particular threshold before which certain number of values is lower. 

The formula to determine the percentile of an examinee would be:

Number of students scoring lower than the candidate *100

Total number of students in the group

What are the subjects considered for eligibility?

The following subjects are considered for eligibility:

  1. Language
  2. Maths
  3. Physics
  4. Chemistry
  5. Biology/Biotechnology
  6. Any technical vocational subject

The Normalization procedure

  1. The aggregate score of a JEE Main Examinee is taken.
  2. JEE Main marks in reference to the percentiles obtained by students on an All India level.
  3. This score would finally determine the rank of the examinee. 

Rank determination for B.tech

  1. Candidates obtaining higher marks in Mathematics would be allotted with a better rank.
  2. Candidates obtaining higher marks in Physics would be allotted with a better rank.
  3. Candidates obtaining a higher absolute value of the ratio determined based on positive to negative marks would be allotted a better rank.
  4. If the above-mentioned criteria do not work, the candidates would be allotted the same rank.

Rank determination for B.Arch

  1. Candidates obtaining higher marks in Aptitude test (Paper 2) would be allotted with a better rank.
  2. Candidates obtaining higher marks in Drawing Test (Paper 2) would be allotted with a better rank.
  3. Candidates obtaining a higher absolute value of the ratio determined based on positive to negative marks would be allotted a better rank.
  4. If the above-mentioned criteria do not work, the candidates would be allotted the same rank.
