The JEE Main results were announced on 18th April 2025 by the National Testing Agency on their official website. While the JoSAA counselling registration has just begun, candidates are eager to get the top seats in their desired colleges. Those who qualify JEE Main and apply for colleges based on this mains score can apply to various colleges like IIITs, NITs, GFTIs, and IIETs. Now, a common score for students in such exams is observed around 95 percentile, and a common question for NIT aspirants is - ‘Which college can I get with 95 percentile in JEE Main?’

To answer this question, candidates are requested to scroll through this article and learn more about various NITs, their acceptance rate, latest NIRF rankings, and which field is best as per your score and the selected NIT. The article aims to guide the students with NIT admissions at 95% score.

What does 95 Percentile mean in JEE Main?

A 95 percentile score in JEE Main usually corresponds between a rank of 45 and 50,000 but may differ as per the current and ongoing trends in addition to the difficulty level of the paper and number of applicants. While this percentile may not get you a seat in top-tier NITs like NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, or NIT Warangal, you still have a good chance at getting admission into several other NITs, especially if you belong to the Home State category or reserved categories like OBC, SC, or ST.

Factors Affecting NIT Admission at 95 Percentile

Candidates should know that a 95 percentile in the JEE Main exam does not guarantee admission to top NITs, and there are several factors that affect the NIT admission process. Given below are a few important factors that affect the process.

What is JoSAA - how to apply, dates, eligibility, and registration fees

Home State Quota

Every NIT reserves 50% of its seats for students from the home state. Candidates from less competitive states stand a better chance at securing a seat in local NITs at 95 percentile.

Reservation Category

If you belong to OBC, SC, ST, or EWS categories, the cut-offs are usually lower, which significantly improves your chances.

Branch Preference

Branches like Computer Science and Electronics are highly competitive. However, less sought-after branches like Civil, Metallurgy, or Biotechnology may have lower cut-offs.

Gender-Based Cutoffs

Some NITs offer a female-only quota, which sometimes results in lower cutoffs for girls.

How to Maximize Your Chances of Getting an NIT Seat at 95 Percentile?

Getting an NIT is a dream for some, while it is an option many have to choose. Given below are 5 useful tips to maximise your chances of getting a seat at a good NIT, if not premier.

  1. Use Home State Advantage: Apply to your home NIT and opt for branches with historically lower cut-offs.
  2. Be Flexible with Branch Choice: Consider taking a core branch or lesser-demanded stream with a plan to change branch later (where permitted).
  3. Participate in All Rounds of JoSAA & CSAB: Do not skip counselling rounds. Even in the last rounds, seats open up due to withdrawals.
  4. Explore CSAB Special Round: Post-JoSAA, CSAB rounds offer a second chance for many students to get into NITs with slightly relaxed cutoffs.
  5. Consider Newer NITs: These institutes may not have the same brand pull yet, but they are improving rapidly in infrastructure and placements.

Important Notes:

  • B.Tech branches usually include: CSE, ECE, EE, ME, CE, and sometimes BioTech or Instrumentation.
  • Placement support varies, but CSE and ECE tend to get the best offers across all NITs.
  • Campus size figures may include future expansion areas; many of the newer NITs are operating from temporary or partial campuses.
  • Packages reflect average CTC (Cost to Company) based on previous 1–2 years’ data; CS and ECE generally fetch higher offers than other branches. The range accounts for variation in streams and student profiles.

What if no NIT - Should You Consider Other Options?

If you are not able to get your preferred NIT or branch with 95 percentile, you can consider the following options.

  • IIITs and GFTIs: Many IIITs (especially newer ones) and Government Funded Technical Institutes accept similar ranks.
  • State Government Colleges via State Counseling: Use your JEE Main score to apply for state-level engineering colleges which often have good placement records.
  • Private Universities: Institutes like Shiv Nadar, Ashoka University (for CS), or IIIT-Hyd’s SCAI program offer quality education with scholarships.
