Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for JoSAA counselling?

To be eligible for JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counseling, candidates must have qualified either JEE Main or JEE Advanced and have registered for JoSAA counseling within the specified timeframe. In addition to these exam qualifications, candidates must also meet the eligibility criteria set by the participating institutes, which often includes specific subject requirements and minimum marks in their 12th board exams.

What is the cut-off rank for NIT?

The cutoff rank for NITs (National Institutes of Technology) varies significantly based on the specific NIT, the desired branch of engineering, and the candidate's category (General, OBC, SC, ST, etc.) and home state vs. other state status. Generally, for top NITs and popular branches like CSE (Computer Science and Engineering), a rank under 5,000 is often required. For non-CSE branches, the required rank can range from 10,000 to 40,000 or even higher, depending on the NIT and the branch.

Can I get IIT without JoSAA Counselling?

No, it is not possible to get into IITs without participating in the JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counselling process. JoSAA is the sole authority responsible for allocating seats in IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs based on JEE Main and JEE Advanced scores. Candidates must register and participate in the JoSAA counselling to be considered for seat allocation in these institutions.

How much money is required for JoSAA?

For JoSAA counselling 2025, the seat acceptance fee is 30,000 for general candidate category, while it is 15,000 for reservation category candidates.

Which counselling is best for JEE Mains?

JoSAA is the primary platform for allocating seats to all participating institutions, including the prestigious IITs. CSAB is a secondary option that provides an opportunity to fill the remaining seats in specific institutions after JoSAA is complete. Hence CSAB Counselling will start after the JoSAA Counselling.

Will 35000 be refunded in JoSAA?

You can get a refund of most of your ₹35,000 JoSAA seat acceptance fee if you withdraw your seat during the official withdrawal period, but a processing charge of ₹7,000 will be deducted. After the institute confirms your admission, or if you miss the withdrawal deadline, the fee is generally not refunded.

How is JoSAA rank calculated?

JoSAA rank is calculated based on the performance of candidates in the JEE Main and JEE Advanced examinations. The rank is determined by the percentile score achieved by a candidate in these exams, with higher percentile scores resulting in better ranks. The ranks are then used to allocate seats in various participating institutes, including IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and GFTIs.

Which rank is seen in JoSAA Counselling?

JoSAA allocation of seats is based on CRL for the Open (General) category of seats. For all other categories like GEN-EWS, GEN-PWD, SC, ST, OBC-NCL, etc., seats are allotted based on the respective category rank.
