IIT Kharagpur was the country's first Indian Institute of Technology. IIT Kharagpur was formally inaugurated on August 18, 1951. It is the largest of the IITs, covering an area of 2100 acres. IIT Kharagpur offers 119+ undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, research, and dual degree programmes. Engineering, Management, Physical Sciences, and Law courses are available. IIT Kharagpur has 650 full-time faculty members and over 11,000 students on campus.

Students at IIT Kharagpur can also pursue inter-institutional programmes in collaboration with other national and international universities and colleges. Among IIT Kharagpur's collaborative institutes are IIM Calcutta, the University of Melbourne, and Curtin University of Technology.

IIT Kharagpur Admissions & Scholarships

Each level of course at IIT Kharagpur has its own admissions, entrance exams, and selection process. Admissions to all B.Tech, B.Arch, and integrated B.Tech-M.Tech programmes are made through the JEE (Advanced) entrance examination. This is your qualifying examination. Following the completion of the qualifying exams, candidates must register on the Joint Seat Allocation Authority portal and choose their preferred IIT and specialisation. Candidates are offered admission to IIT Kharagpur based on their JEE (Advanced) scores and preferences. Candidates for B.Arch must pass the AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test) in addition to the JEE Advanced.

Candidates must pass the GATE exam to be admitted to the M.Tech and M.Tech/Ph.D dual degree programmes.

  • For GATE qualified candidates, there is a counselling process after which admission is offered.
  • Admissions may be granted solely on the basis of the GATE score or on the basis of both personal interaction and the GATE score.
  • Admission to the MCP-Ph.D programme is based on performance in the Joint M. Tech/MCP-Ph.D entrance exam.
  • Admission to IIT Kharagpur's unique Masters in Medical Technology Course is obtained by applying on the IIT KGP website and passing a written test administered by IIT KGP.
  • Admission to the LLM programme is done through an online application on the IIT Kharagpur website, followed by a qualifying institute written test.

MBA Admission Process

  • Participate in the CAT qualifying entrance exam.
  • Fill out the application form and pay the application fees online at IIT Kharagpur's Vinod Gupta School of Management website.
  • Attend the WAT PI shortlisting process.
  • The final decision is based on the applicant's CAT/GMAT score, academic background, and performance in the WAT-PI process.

IIT Kharagpur has set a record of 1600 placement offers in the first phase of placements for 2021-22. According to reports, 20 students were paid more than INR 1 CPA for domestic placements. The salary package for international placements increased to INR 2.4 CPA and INR 2 CPA for two students. As the campus of IIT Kharagpur is spread over a huge area of 2100 acres, the facilities available here are immense. The campus is a mini self-sufficient ecosystem with education, accommodation, recreation, food, groceries, and utilities all available within. All the faculty members and staff reside on campus in accommodations provided by IIT Kharagpur. Accommodation for visitors and guests is also available. There are 4 schools within the campus so that children of the staff and faculty members do not have to travel long distances.
