JoSAA seat allotment process and guide - how to apply, and documents required

The JoSAA counselling is mandatory for those seeking admission to engineering courses. Any candidate who has appeared and scored a rank in the JEE Advanced exam or has a rank in JEE Main is eligible to apply and appear for the JoSAA counselling. The JEE advanced aspirants will be eligible for IIT admissions, and the JEE Main candidates are eligible for IIITs, NITs, IIETs, and GFTIs.

JoSAA authorities have announced the counselling schedule and the registrations for JoSAA are set to begin on 3rd June, one day after the JEE advanced result. The candidates who register for JoSAA counselling will then be allotted seats based on factors like the JEE advanced or JEE main rank and score, seat availability, preference of college, and more.

What is JoSAA?

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) was set up in 2015 to streamline and centralize the admission process for 100+ participating technical institutes in India. Before JoSAA, candidates had to undergo separate counseling processes for IITs and NIT+ system institutions. JoSAA unified this to make the procedure more transparent, efficient, and less stressful for students.

JoSAA conducts seat allocation in multiple rounds based on candidates’ JEE Main or JEE Advanced ranks, their preferences filled during registration, category, and seat availability.

Mock Allotment

Before the actual seat allotment rounds, JoSAA conducts two rounds of mock allotment to help candidates understand how their choices and ranks may translate into seat allocation. It’s an opportunity to refine preferences.

Seat Allotment Rounds

JoSAA typically conducts six rounds of seat allocation. In each round, seats are allotted based on rank, preferences, category (GEN, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, etc.), and seat availability.

Seat Acceptance and Fee Payment

Once a seat is allotted, the candidate must accept the seat by paying a seat acceptance fee and uploading required documents for verification. Choices at this stage include:

  • Freeze – Accept the allotted seat and not participate in further rounds.
  • Float – Accept the seat but also be considered for higher preferences in future rounds.
  • Slide – Accept the seat but only be considered for a higher preferred course within the same institute.

Reporting to Reporting Centres (Online or Physical)

After seat acceptance, candidates must complete the verification process, which is typically conducted online. Final confirmation is subject to successful verification.

Final Reporting to Allotted Institute

After the final round of allotment, candidates must report to the allotted institute within the stipulated timeline to complete admission formalities.

Documents Required for JoSAA Counseling

The candidates must carry the following documents for the JoSAA counselling process and JoSAA seat allotment process. All documents should be scanned clearly and uploaded as per JoSAA guidelines.

  • JEE Main/Advanced Admit Card and Rank Card
  • Class 10th and 12th mark sheets and certificates
  • Category certificate (if applicable)
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Seat acceptance fee payment proof
  • Identity proof (Aadhaar card, etc.)
