Over this period since inception, CAT exam has made a lot of changes in terms of the exam attempt and applicants, a major dip was seen in 2009 when a decision was taken to go paperless. Technical issues arose and the exam was rescheduled for a lot of applicants.

Score Evaluation

In order to ensure fairness and equity in comparison of performances of the candidates across  different test  sessions, the scores of  the candidates shall  be subjected  to a  process of Normalization.  The  Normalization process to be implemented shall take into account location and scale differences of score distributions across different forms. The scaled scores obtained by this process shall be converted into percentiles for purposes of shortlisting.

For purposes of reporting,  Scaled  Scores for each  Section  (Section  I:  Quantitative Ability, Section II: Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning, Section III: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension) and Total along with the Percentile shall be published.

The Normalization procedure is usually defined by the exam convening body (IIM) every year. This procedure is used to calculate the result of the students who had appeared for the Common Admission Test.

The CAT would be conducted across 2 sessions. To ensure fairness and equity in the comparison of performances across test sessions, the scores of the candidates are normalized.

What's New ?

The CAT exam structure is reviewed on a year on year basis. IIMs have also ensured that CAT Questions, content and the question type are not repeated. This is one reason why CAT in specific has no syllabus. Topics which are questioned in a particular year may go missing in the next few years and then the same may arise after a couple of years.

CAT was earlier a pen paper-based test until 2009 when it was Computer Based with IIM-A being the convenor of the CAT Exam that year. The first and second computerized CAT exams had 3 sections on Quantitative, DI, LR and VARC. A total of 60 questions with 20 from each section was given. With the partnership of Prometric, CAT was conducted in a testing window of about 22 days with 2 sessions each day making it about 44 sessions. Candidates were given the option of choosing their venue, time and date.

CAT aspirants keeping track of earlier changes can expect the following:

  1. The testing window for the Common Admission Test could go up to 2 days instead of one day since it is being demanded.
  2. A possibility of withdrawing the sectional time limit to ensure candidates make a focused attempt.
  3. There could be a change in the number of non-MCQs or they could be completely removed.
