IIT Guwahati has released the GATE 2026 dates on the official website - gates2026.iitg.ac.in. The GATE 2026 registration is set to begin on August 25, 2025 and the last date to register for the GATE exam without a late fee is September 25, 2025. The GATE 2026 exam will be held on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026, followed by the GATE results on March 19, 2026.
What's New in GATE 2026?
- The GATE 2026 has introduced a new paper under Engineering Sciences (XE), which is Energy Science. The paper code of engineering science is I.
- The GATE 2026 application fees have been revised; the fees for SC/ST and female category candidates are INR 1000 (under the regular category) and INR 2000 for all other candidates. On the other hand, the fees during the extended period are INR 1500 and INR 2500, respectively.
What is GATE Exam?
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or GATE is a national level entrance exam for admission to Master of Technology (MTech) and direct PhD in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other institutes/universities across India. Many public sector undertakings (PSUs) and state electricity boards (SEBs) also accept GATE for recruitment of trainee engineers and scientists for group C-level posts.
The exam is conducted by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee and Indian Institute for Science, Bangalore (IISC Bangalore) on rotational basis on behalf of National Coordination Board (NCB - GATE), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource & Development (MHRD), Government of India.

GATE 2026 Admit Card
The candidates must carry their GATE admit card to the test centre. Candidates' identification proof will also be required to appear for the exam. Hence, the candidates need to carry their GATE hall ticket to the exam centre along with an original and valid ID proof.

GATE 2026 Answer Key
GATE 2026 answer keys will be released within 2 – 3 weeks of the GATE 2026 exam. You can download the answer key from official website gate2026.iitg.ac.in. With the response sheet and answer key you can calculate your score before the result is declared.
If you are not satisfied with the answer key you can challenge it by paying 500 rupees per question. Answer key challenge window will be open for 2-3 days only so be aware of the time.

GATE 2026 Result
The GATE 2026 result will be announced on March 19. Candidates can check the GATE 2026 result scorecard using their candidate login. The authorities will issue the GATE 2026 a few days after the release of the GATE result 2026. Candidates who qualify for the entrance exam can download the GATE Scorecard from the portal. Based on normalisation, the GATE Score is calculated for every candidate on a scale of 0 to 1000.The GATE scorecard will remain valid for three years from the GATE result 2026declaration date.

GATE 2026 Counselling
GATE Qualified candidates have two options for counselling. GATE-qualified candidates can opt for COAP for IIT MTech and CCMT for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs MTech. Eligible candidates should participate in GATE 2026 counselling as per schedule. GATE-qualified candidates can also get financial assistance of 12400 per month through GATE counselling.
Counseling Process For GATE COAP 2026
Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) is the common platform for all the participating institutes to fill all the M.Tech. seats and for the participating PSU’s to upload their Job offers to the GATE Qualified candidates.
COAP 2026 will have 5 main and 5 additional rounds. COAP 2026 Main round counseling will be conducted from May 2026 to June 2026 in 5 different rounds. In the main 5 rounds, Candidates will have three options any one option; Accept & Freeze, Retain & Wait and Reject & Wait to select out of three available choices.
Please note that the 5 additional rounds will be final, so candidates will have only Accept and Freeze and Reject options in rounds 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10.
Counseling Process For GATE CCMT 2026
Centralized Counselling for M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan. [CCMT] is the common platform for GATE-qualified candidates to take admission to NITs, IIITs & other GFTIs. CCMT 2026 Counselling will have three regular rounds, two special rounds (SR) & a national spot round (NSR).
CCMT will be conducted from June 2026 to July 2026 in 6 rounds. Candidates will have four options for the allotted seats namely Float, Slide, Freeze & Surrender (Participate in the next round).
GATE Scholarships
The AICTE will soon open the GATE 2025 scholarship portal for the 2025-26 academic year. The expected dates are September first week. The GATE Scholarship, offered by the Government of India through AICTE, provides crucial financial support to students pursuing advanced studies in engineering, architecture, or pharmacy. With a valid GATE score and admission to a full-time M.Tech, M.E, M.Arch, or M.Pharm program at an AICTE-approved institute, students can receive a monthly stipend of INR 12,400 for up to two years.
PSU Recruitment through GATE
Many public sector undertakings, such as ONGC, SAIL, BHEL, GAIL, and Indian Oil, recruit Graduate Engineer Trainees (GET) based on GATE scores. Advertisements for PSU recruitment through GATE are generally published around the declaration of GATE 2026 exam results.
Candidates interested in applying for GATE PSU Recruitment 2026need to check the official pages of PSU. Once the GATE 2026 result is announced, candidates must register for PSU recruitment through GATE by filling out the online application form. After registration, candidates must appear in the written test and interview per schedule.
