The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (commonly known as IIT Bombay or IIT Mumbai) was founded in 1958 and is the first public college to receive funding from UNESCO. The Indian Parliament designated it as an "Institute of National Importance" in 1961. It has been designated as a "Deemed University" and is self-governing. 

In the QS World Rankings 2023, IIT Bombay is rated 149th, which is better than last year’s rank of 177th. IIT Bombay is rated 177th. IIT Mumbai has been placed third in both the overall and engineering categories by NIRF for the year 2021. With a 60-year history, the deemed-university campus has expanded to include 15 academic departments, 34 centres, 17 departments, and three schools, offering more than 60 engineering courses.

IIT Bombay Courses

IIT Bombay provides approximately 86 courses in Engineering, Technology, Science, and Management at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. Object-oriented programming, programming basics and other short-term certificate online courses are also available via deemed university. National-level entrance tests such as JEE Main, JEE Advanced, GATE and others are used to determine admission to UG and PF programmes.

IIT Bombay Admission

The admissions process at IIT Delhi is mostly driven by students’ performance in entrance examinations for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Learn more about IIT Delhi’s 2022 admissions.

  1. Candidates seeking admission to the B. Tech programme must have passed the IITs’ JEE Advanced entrance test.
  2. Candidates are admitted to M. Tech programmes based on their GATE test scores.
  3. A valid score on the IIT JAM entrance test is required for admission to the M. Sc programme.
  4. Candidates must have a valid score on the national CEED entrance test in order to be admitted to the M. Design programme.
  5. Candidates seeking admission to an MBA programme must have a valid score in the CAT exam, which is administered nationally.

IIT Bombay Placement

Placements for the 2022-23 outgoing class are now underway at IIT Bombay. However, according to a press statement dated December 1, 2022, the first step of the placement procedure is now complete. The following are the highlights of the placement drive:

  • The highest domestic package offered in Phase 1 of IIT Bombay placements remained INR 3.67 Crore.
  • 1.31 crore was the biggest overseas offer.
  • The average package offered to BTech students at IIT Bombay was 18.80 lakhs.
  • In 2023, the median package for IIT Delhi MTech and MBA programmes was INR 14.76 Lakhs and INR 25.76 Lakhs, respectively.
