Frequently Asked Questions

When will the GATE 2026 cutoff be officially released?

The GATE 2026 result and initial qualifying cutoff will be released by IIT Guwahati on March 19, 2026, along with your scorecard on the GOAPS portal. However, the final admission cutoff for specific institutes like IITs and NITs will be released later, after each round of COAP 2026 counselling. These will be available on the respective institute websites.

What is the GATE cutoff and why is it important for students?

The GATE cutoff is the minimum mark a student must score to qualify for the GATE 2026 exam. It is very important because clearing this cutoff makes you eligible for admission to M.Tech programs in IITs, NITs, and other institutes through counselling, and also qualifies you for various Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) recruitments. Without meeting the cutoff, you cannot proceed.

What is the difference between GATE qualifying and admission cutoff?

The GATE qualifying cutoff is the minimum score required to simply pass the exam and be eligible for counselling. It is released with the results. The GATE admission cutoff, on the other hand, is the much higher score or rank needed to actually secure a seat in a specific M.Tech program at an IIT or NIT. This admission cutoff varies greatly by institute, branch, and student category.

How are the GATE cutoff marks determined each year?

GATE cutoff marks are decided by several factors. These include the total number of available seats in various M.Tech programs, the total number of students who appeared for the exam, the average score obtained by all candidates, the difficulty level of the GATE question paper for that specific year, and the general cutoff trends observed in previous years examinations. These factors collectively influence the cutoff.

Can I check my GATE 2026 cutoff on the scorecard itself?

Yes, you can definitely check your GATE 2026 qualifying cutoff directly on your scorecard. Once IIT Guwahati declares the GATE results on March 19, 2026, you will be able to download your scorecard from the official GOAPS portal. Your scorecard will clearly show the marks you obtained and indicate if you have met the minimum qualifying cutoff for your chosen paper and category.

Is it possible to get admission to IITs/NITs with only the qualifying cutoff?

Simply meeting the GATE qualifying cutoff makes you eligible to participate in the counselling process, like COAP. However, to actually secure admission into an IIT or NIT for M.Tech, you typically need to achieve a much higher score, known as the GATE admission cutoff. Admission cutoffs are usually higher because they depend on the competition for limited seats at specific institutes and branches.

How do previous years GATE cutoff trends help aspirants for 2026?

Looking at previous years GATE cutoff trends is very useful for aspirants. It helps you understand the general score range needed to qualify and secure admission in various branches and institutes. While actual cutoffs can fluctuate based on exam difficulty and applicant numbers, these trends provide a good estimate, allowing you to set realistic target scores and plan your preparation and institute preferences effectively for GATE 2026.
