Frequently Asked Questions

What is GATE counselling for MTech admissions?

GATE counselling is how you get MTech admissions to various institutes and universities based on your GATE scores. It is not a single process but happens through two main platforms: COAP for IITs and PSUs, and CCMT for NITs, IIITs, and other Government-Funded Technical Institutes. Each platform has its own rounds and procedures for seat allotment.

What is the difference between COAP and CCMT counselling?

COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) is mainly for MTech admissions to IITs and for PSU job offers. CCMT (Centralised Counselling for M.Tech) handles MTech admissions for institutes other than IITs, like NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. You choose the platform based on where you want to study.

What are the eligibility criteria for GATE counselling?

To participate in GATE counselling, you need a valid GATE scorecard, usually from 2025, 2024, or 2023. You also need a Bachelors degree (like BTech, BE) with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CGPA. Reserved category candidates get relaxed eligibility norms.

What documents do I need for GATE counselling verification?

For document verification, you will need your GATE scorecard, photo ID, Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, qualifying exam mark sheets, degree or provisional certificate, and category certificate if applicable. Also keep passport size photos, seat acceptance fee proof, and registration form printout ready.

How do I apply for MTech in IITs using GATE COAP?

To apply for MTech in IITs, you must register on the official COAP portal using your GATE details. After registration and verification, you can log in, view seat offers, and decide to Accept and Freeze, Retain and Wait, or Reject and Wait for better options across multiple rounds.

How can I get MTech admission in NITs and IIITs through GATE?

For MTech admission in NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs, you need to participate in CCMT counselling. NIT Kurukshetra organises this. You register online, fill and lock your choices, and then go through various rounds of seat allotment. Your decision options are Freeze, Float, or Slide after seat allotment.

What decision options do I have after seat allotment in CCMT?

In CCMT, after getting a seat, you have three main options. You can Freeze to accept the seat and exit counselling. You can Float to keep the current seat but also be considered for an even better choice in subsequent rounds. Or you can Slide to keep the seat in the same institute but try for a different specialization.
