CAT Cutoff is the minimum score or percentile a test taker must achieve to advance to the next exam round. The CAT percentile is taken into account by several management institutes throughout India while selecting applicants for admission. The IIMs have established themselves as India's top institutions for management and research education.

The Indian Institutes of Management, or IIMs, will publish their unique CAT cutoff for 2025 after the release of the CAT result in order to shortlist applicants for the WAT, GD, and PI admission procedures that follow.

Aspirants in this article can check the CAT cut off from the previous year to gain an idea of the expected CAT cutoff for 2025, because the IIMs will not release the CAT 2025 cutoff till after the CAT 2025 Result is announced.

CAT Cutoff 2025 – Key Highlights & Overview

The ultimate CAT cutoff for 2025 would be at least a 90% for admission into any IIM or top MBA institutions in India. The CAT cut offs for prestigious IIMs like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, and IIM Kozhikode are still high (99+ percentile).

The CAT cutoffs are frequently set at the 60 percentile and above in Tier 3 institutions and at the 80 percentile and higher in Tier 2 colleges. The cutoffs for CAT 2025 are expected to be in the same range for these colleges.

When the CAT Results are announced, the candidates willing to take admission in top MBA colleges must go through their Cut Off Trends. Check out the other highlights of CAT Cutoff below.

  • To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the required CAT cutoff score.
  • The cutoffs for the top IIMs for students in the General category often vary from 99 to 100 percentile.
  • The cut offs for the CAT exam for students in the reserved category are slightly lower, ranging from 95 to 98 percentile.
  • Admission requirements for the premier MBA programs, including those at FMS, MDI, and SPJIMR, vary from 95 to 99.
  • The IIMs do not make the CAT cut offs public. Only candidates who take the CAT exam are able to see the cutoffs via account login.
  • For IIM admission, there are two separate CAT cutoffs - the qualifying cut off and the final cut off.
  • The qualifying cut off is established before to the release of the CAT results, and the final cut off is established during the PI shortlisting process.
  • There is a minimal cutoff imposed by other colleges that accept the CAT exam score for admission as well.
  • The percentage a candidate must obtain to pass each IIM's cut off will vary because each IIM has a distinct cut off.
  • Students who scored between 99 and 100 percentile will be contacted by prestigious IIMs like the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Mumbai, etc.
  • A few non-IIMs that demand a +99 percentile include ISB Hyderabad, DMS (IIT D), FMS Delhi University, IIT Bombay, and others.
  • Each of the 20 IIMs will announce the minimum CAT cutoff for 2025 in accordance with their admissions criteria in order to screen candidates for the following selection procedures.

Qualifying CAT Cutoff vs Final CAT Cutoff

IIM MBA selection includes two types of CAT cut offs. The first type is qualifying cut off, which is essentially the minimum percentile you need to score for being eligible for PI short list. The second type is final cut off, which is the minimum percentile on which a candidate is selected for PI round. Check below the difference between qualifying and final CAT cutoffs.

Qualifying CAT cutoffs

Final CAT cutoffs

IIM eligibility cut off or IIM shortlist cut off, it is the minimum marks a candidate must score so that he/she is eligible for interview call (for WAT/GD-PI round) from the IIMs.

Also referred to as IIM call cut offs, it is the minimum percentile score fixed by the IIMs for selection of candidates for WAT/GD-PI round.

Meeting the qualifying cut off does not mean that the candidate will be selected for the WAT/GD-PI round.

Meeting the final CAT cut off does not mean that the candidate will be selected for admission.

The qualifying CAT cut off is fixed before the announcement of CAT result.

The final cut off is determined after the declaration of CAT result.

The qualifying CAT cut off percentiles are announced by every IIM in the notification of admission criteria and selection process for that academic year.

The final CAT cut offs are not announced officially by any IIM or even other top MBA institutes.

The qualifying CAT cut offs remain above 90 percentile for all IIMs, exception being IIM Ahmedabad whose qualifying cut off has been 85 percentile in the past few years.

The final CAT cut offs remain as high as 99.99 percentile for all top IIMs and 95+ percentile for new IIMs.

The qualifying CAT cut offs include sectional and overall cut offs.

The final CAT cut offs include sectional and overall cut offs.

The qualifying CAT cut off is fixed category wise. The cut off for General category students is high (90), while for reserved category students, it is low (70 and below).

The final CAT cut off is also fixed category wise. For General category male students with engineering background, the final cut off is high as compared to reserved category students, female students and those with non-engineering background.

How to Check CAT Cutoff?

After two months of the exam's planned date, the CAT Cutoff will be made public. So, it is anticipated that the cut off and results would be made public in January 2025. The measures to take in order to get the official cutoff are listed below.

  • Visit the "CAT 2025" official website.
  • Choose "CAT Cutoff 2025."
  • Check the cutoff scores for the section and category to which you belong.

Factors Affecting CAT Cutoff 2025

Every year, a variety of circumstances influence the cutoff. Some of the guidelines that impact the CAT Cutoff 2025 are listed below.

  • Number of Applicants: The cutoff value increases as the number of applicants increases.
  • Exam Difficulty: The cut-offs are often low for tough exams; on the other hand, they are projected to be higher for simple to moderately difficult exams.
  • Seats: The number of seats that are accessible for admission purposes.

CAT Cutoff Score Vs Percentile

For admission to MBA courses, B-Schools consider CAT percentile which is calculated from the scaled scores of all test takers.CAT scaled score is not the same as raw CAT score. It is the score arrived at after normalisation of the raw scores of all candidates across exam slots. This is done to ensure that every candidate's performance across the exam sessions are judged on the same scale and no one gets the advantage of solving an easier CAT test form or the disadvantage of solving a tougher test form.

A high CAT score may not convert into high percentile if a large number of candidates have scored the same or higher. However, an estimation can be calculated based on number of test takers and difficulty level of CAT exam for that year. CAT Cut Offs: IIM Admission and Selection Criteria

Candidates who meet the required CAT cut off are eligible to apply for WAT/GD-PI round. The IIM selection process includes screening of candidates based on CAT score, WAT/GD-PI round and final selection. Most of the IIMs conducted WAT and PI rounds from February to April while 'offer of admission' letters are issued to successful candidates in May. Nine new IIMs have a common admission process called IIM CAP.

  • On receiving invitation for WAT/GD-PI round, the candidate must present the following documents for confirming participation:
  • Original and self-attested photocopies of marksheets of Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation.
  • Original and self-attested photocopies of caste/class and/or disability certificate in case of SC, ST, NC-OBC and PwD candidates.
  • Candidates appearing for the final-year bachelor's degree exam or equivalent must present an original certificate from the Principal/Registrar/Director of the university/institution certifying that the candidate has obtained a minimum of 50 per cent aggregate or equivalent (45 per cent in case of the candidates belonging to SC, ST, and PwD categories) based on latest available grades/marks.
  • The IIM final offer of admission is based on the Composite Score of a candidate that takes into account the factors mentioned below -

Frequently Asked Questions

What does CAT Cut Off stand for?

The minimal qualifying percentile for the CAT is what candidates must achieve in order to be selected for the IIM admission phases, which include the Written Ability Test, Group Discussion, and Personal Interview. The 90-99 percentile cutoff for CAT exam is the minimum for admission at an IIM.

What is the CAT Cut off Range for new IIMs?

The CAT cutoff range for the more recent IIMs, including IIM Nagpur, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Ranchi, IIM Jammu, IIM Kashipur, and IIM Sirmaur, is likely to be 90-95 percentile for applicants in the General category and 60-75 percentile for students in the Reserved category.

What is the difference between the CAT qualifying cut off and the final cut off?

The qualifying CAT cut off is the minimum percentile that candidates must achieve in CAT exam in order to be eligible for the WAT/GD-PI rounds, while the final CAT cut off is the minimum percentile that candidates must achieve in order to participate in the CAT counselling process.

What is the CAT cutoff and why is it important?

The CAT cutoff is the minimum score or percentile you need to get to move to the next round of the MBA admission process. It is super important because top management institutes like the IIMs use this cutoff to shortlist candidates for interviews, group discussions, and written ability tests. Without meeting it, you cant proceed further in the selection process. It ensures only a certain level of candidates are considered.

What CAT percentile is needed for top IIMs like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta?

For general category students, getting into the top IIMs like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta usually requires a very high CAT percentile, typically in the 99-100 range. For other older IIMs like Lucknow or Indore, it can be around 97-98 percentile. Reserved category candidates usually have slightly lower cutoffs, often ranging from 95-98 percentile for these premier institutes.

Can I get into good MBA colleges with a lower CAT score than IIMs?

Absolutely! While IIMs have very high cutoffs, many other excellent MBA colleges across India also accept CAT scores. Their cutoffs are generally lower than the top IIMs. You can find good colleges with CAT cutoffs ranging from 95 percentile and above, and even some reputable ones in the 70-80 percentile range. Dont lose hope if you miss the top IIM cutoffs; many great options are available.

What factors influence the CAT cutoff for a particular year?

Several factors decide the CAT cutoff each year. First, the number of students who apply for the exam plays a role; more applicants can increase the cutoff. Second, the difficulty level of the CAT exam matters; a tougher exam might lead to lower cutoffs, while an easier one could mean higher cutoffs. Finally, the total number of seats available for admission in a particular institute also affects the cutoff.

How can I check the official CAT cutoff for 2025?

The official CAT cutoff for 2025 will be released after the CAT 2025 results are announced, likely in January 2025. To check your cutoff, you will need to visit the official CAT 2025 website. Look for the CAT Cutoff 2025 section and then check the specific cutoff scores for the section and category you belong to by logging into your account.

What raw score is considered good in CAT for IIM admissions?

For CAT 2025, 102-120+ raw marks are excellent for a 99+ percentile, ideal for top IIMs like Ahmedabad. A very good score of 80-100 raw marks means 95-98 percentile, suitable for mid-tier IIMs like Shillong or IIM CAP. For newer IIMs, a good score is 72-84 raw marks, generally placing you in the 90-95 percentile range.
