XAT 2020 Eligibility

XAT Eligibility

Eligibility Criteria of XAT is as follows:

  • Graduate or bachelor degree - Candidate should be a graduate or should have a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized institute or university in order to apply for this exam.
  • Candidates have to complete their graduation by June - Candidate should have completed their graduation by the month of June only then he/she can apply for XAT exam.
  • Final year students of graduation -  Candidates who are in final year of graduation are eligible for applying to XAT.
  • The eligibility for XLRI programmes like Human Resource Management (HRM), Business Management (BM) is similar. Candidates with three years of work experience will be given preference in Global Business Management.

Note: There's no specific age limit for XAT exam.

Programme-wise Eligibility Criteria:


Business Management/Human Resource Management

Eligibility: Recognized Bachelor's degree of minimum three years duration or equivalent in any discipline. Those completing their final examination by June 10, 2019, may also apply. All Indian candidates must have appeared for XAT. However, NRI and foreign candidates may apply through GMAT score.

General Management Programme

Eligibility: Recognized bachelor's degree of minimum three years duration in India/abroad with at least 5 years of managerial/supervisory experience by March 31, 2019.
Candidates may apply either through XAT or GMAT score.

XAT Eligibility Criteria over the years have remained unchanged. XLRI is not proposing changes in the XAT Examination Eligibility. XAT Eligibility criteria for the examination prescribes the no age bar to appear in XAT. XLRI also has never restricted any candidate to seek admission in the XAT Eligibility to seek admission on the basis of age bar. 

As per XAT Eligibility criteria, a candidate is encouraged to be eligible to appear for XAT, if he/she holds a recognized bachelor degree with a minimum of 3 years duration. The candidates completing their final graduation or who have completed should follow the XAT Eligibility Criteria.


For Human Resources Development Program, candidates should have a 3 years Bachelor's degree or equivalent from institutes of recognition. Candidates completing their graduation by June 10, 2019, should also be able to apply.

Business Management

For Business Management Programme, the eligibility criteria are the same as that of Human Resource Management.

General Management

Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in India or overseas with a minimum of 5 years managerial expertise by date March 31, 2019.  Candidates would also be able to apply either through XAT or GMAT Score. 

The XAT Application Procedure usually opens up in August, from the previous year onwards, the application process follows two stages. After the initial phase is done in the month of November, the next application window begins from the second week of December.

There is a variation in the amount of the application fee paid as in the initial phase, a candidate is required to pay INR 1650 and in the second phase, the candidates would be required to pay INR 2000 if they submit their XAT Application after the first phase of November.

The XAT Application Process will be held completely online and the applications sent by XAT Aspirants to the examination authorities office would not be accepted in hard copy. Once they receive the login credentials, the candidate should log in again to submit the application form by filling up the requisite details.

The XAT was also held online last year for the first time with major operational failures across two centers to the extent that the exams have to be rescheduled. The candidates should also necessarily go through the XAT Exam pattern. Part 1 is a completely objective section wherein it carries 78 questions from three sections. Part two is a mix of subjective and objective inquiries wherein two sections called General Knowledge and Essay Writing is asked.
