It was a challenging situation for Maharashtra and one that made raising educational attainment levels tough.

History of Maharashtra Education

Modern schools and colleges were established during the British colonial era thanks in large part to the efforts of the American Marathi Mission, Scottish Presbyterian missionary John Wilson, Indian nationalists Vasudev Balwant Phadke and Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and social reformers Jyotirao Phule, Dhondo Keshav Karve, and Bhaurao Patil. The Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University was founded in 1916 and is the oldest women's liberal arts college in South Asia. The third-oldest college in Asia was founded in 1854 and is called the College of Engineering Pune. One of the first polytechnics in India was founded in Nagpur, the Government Polytechnic, in 1914.

Keeping that in mind, the government of Maharashtra has introduced various schemes for the improvement of education. One of them is the mid-day meal scheme. In India, malnutrition is a major problem for growing children. Nutritional deficits and their prevalence among school-age children cannot be disregarded. The Mid-Day Meal Scheme, also known as the National Program of Nutritional Support to Primary Education, was introduced as a centrally sponsored program on August 15, 1995. Its goal was to further the universalization of primary education by boosting enrollment, retention, and attendance while also improving the nutrition of primary school students.

From January 1st 2008, the Maharashtra State Government has expanded the Mid-day Meal Program to include children in upper primary (classes VI-VIII) in 43 educationally deficient blocks in 10 districts. As in September 2008 and onward, this programme is being implemented across the whole state of Maharashtra.
