Fergusson College

The establishment of Fergusson College Pune took place in the year 1884. It is affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University and approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The Fergusson College has also been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of ‘A’. Fergusson College is an ‘Autonomous’ College.

The college is mainly known for offering courses in the field of Arts and Science. This public educational institution offers programs at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Fergusson College had the privilege to have Professor Vaman Shivram Apte as its first principal. And the second principal of the institution was the famous Social reformer, journalist, thinker and educationist Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, who served as its second principal from August 1892 till his death in June 1895. The area of the campus is around 65 acres. The campus houses museums for each department, huge labs and other facilities. The building is old and holds so much history in the form of some very books and manuscripts for students to access. The College is among the other nineteen colleges to receive the tag of National Heritage Institution, and because of this Fergusson College receives financial assistance for preserving the college. The tag was given in the year 2015 by the UGC.

Fergusson College Placement

The Fergusson College Placement procedure involves various steps. The aspirants are expected to go through the placement activities. The Placement Cell of Fergusson College Pune organizes various events in order to enhance the learning capabilities of the students. The students are shortlisted based on their academic performance.

Career Support Center (CFC) was founded in the early 1990s as a "Training and Placement Cell," primarily to assist with placements for computer science programmes and provide an industrial interface. The number and scope of activities carried out under this Cell later grew exponentially. The Fergusson College Pune Placement Cell began receiving projects from businesses, and over time it developed into a powerful support system for student placement and training.

The Highest Package for Fergusson College Placement 2021 was 11 LPA, the Average Placement remained at 5 LPA and the Median Salary Package stood at 3 LPA.

  • P. V. Narasimha Rao (1921–2004): He was the 9th Prime Minister of India. Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao was an Indian lawyer, statesman, and politician. He served as the country’s Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996 (28 June 1921 – 23 December 2004). He earned his law degree from Fergusson College of the University of Bombay in Pune.
  • Vishwanath Pratap Singh:  He is also known as V. P. Singh, he was an Indian politician who served as the country’s seventh prime minister from 1989 to 1990. He died on November 27, 2008, at the age of 86. He received his education at Fergusson College in Pune and Allahabad University.
  • Vinayak Damodar Savarkar {Veer Savarkar} (1883–1966):  Hindu nationalist advocate, president of the Hindu Mahasabha, Author, Poet, a Nationalist & reformer.
  • P. L. Deshpande (1919–2000): Marathi writer, actor, music composer, film and television producer, film director, music director & a great philanthrope. Famous as "Maharashtra’s beloved personality". He did his BA from Fergusson College, Pune.

The Infrastructure of Fergusson College is spread over an area of 65 acres. The college is basically known for its age-old architecture and humongous campus providing all the basic amenities. The Fergusson College Pune Campus comprises 21 buildings. These buildings house a variety of Educational Departments. Some of the most important features of the college are mentioned below:

  • Bai Jerbai Wadia Library is considered to be one of the oldest libraries. It has a wide collection of very old and rare manuscripts that have now been digitized.

Coming to its faculty, the faculty members are well-educated and experienced in their respective subjects. The faculty members of Fergusson College Pune use conventional as well as modern and advanced teaching aids. A lesser-known fact about Fergusson College is that it has two sections:

  • For the students who are in school, there is a Junior Wing or junior college. Here, various courses are being offered in the Arts and Science streams, and after the course completion, the students appear for the Higher-Secondary State Certificate examination.
  • And the other section is the Senior Wing which offers bachelor’s degrees in 29 subjects and MA or master’s degrees in 16 disciplines.
  • The Fergusson College is a result of the efforts of a pre-independence organisation named the Deccan Education Society (DES) which was founded by prominent freedom fighters like  Lokmanya Tilak, Vishnushastri Chiplunkar, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, Mahadeo Ballal Namjoshi, and Vaman Shivram Apte in 1884. It was considered a very brave move to start a privately managed college in India in that era, and with the tireless efforts of the leaders, Fergusson College came into existence on 2nd January 1885. It was named Fergusson College to appreciate the efforts of Sir James Fergusson in the establishment of the college.

Fergusson College Hostel

Fergusson College Hostels facilities are available for both boys and girls. The Hostels are situated in the Fergusson College Campus itself, which is around 65-acre in area. There are six hostels, which can accommodate 230 female and 441 male students. There is a separate "Rector Office" with specialised staff for general administration to oversee the daily/routine affairs of the Fergusson College Hostels. A separate group, the "Hostel Management Committee," has also been established by the parent organisation, the Deccan Education Society (DES), to oversee the activities in the hostel. Two honorary medical officers visit the hostels three times a week to provide the residents with medical advice. The hostels are routinely maintained by the DES Estate department. The Fergusson College Hostel Fees range around INR 32000 for Boy Hostel for 1 year and these hostel fees are exclusive of mess i.e 2875 per month. The Fergusson College hostel Fees for Girls are around 26000. The Fergusson College Hostel fees do not include the deposit money which is 4500.
