Who is a Village Sarpanch in Indian Villages?

A Sarpanch in India is the elected leader of a Gram Panchayat, which is basically the local government in rural areas. Villagers vote for their Sarpanch, making them the main representative of the community. This role is important for carrying out government programs, keeping up village facilities, and settling local issues. The Sarpanch works with Panchayat members and other officials to help things run smoothly in the village.

They take the lead on projects related to sanitation, education, water supply, and public health. Plus, they act as a go-between for the villagers and the government, bringing up the community's needs and concerns. Even though it’s often an honorary role with a small salary, being a Sarpanch comes with a lot of influence and responsibility in shaping village life. 1. Travel Allowance (TA): This is money you get back or a set amount for traveling to official meetings and events.
  2. Communication Allowance: Some states help cover costs for mobile or internet use when it’s for work-related communication.

  6. Access to Government Officials: Sarpanches can reach out directly to district and block-level officers, which helps them address village concerns more easily.
  7. Use of Panchayat Office Infrastructure: They can use government buildings, furniture, and staff (like a Panchayat Secretary) for their work.

Note: These benefits are mainly to help sarpanches do their jobs better, not to provide a big paycheck. Different states provide benefits according to the requirement.

Sarpanch Salary in Gujarat

As of June 2025, there is no official and clear information about how much Sarpanches in Gujarat get paid each month. Back in March 2021, the Gujarat Panchayat Parishad suggested a monthly payment of ₹5,000 for Sarpanches, pointing out the important role they play in village development and the expenses they often cover themselves. In September 2022, during a campaign, Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal promised that if his party won, Sarpanches would earn a fixed salary of ₹10,000 a month, and each village panchayat would get ₹10 lakh every year for development. But since that was just a campaign promise, it might not be the current pay structure. Without any recent official updates, we still aren’t sure what Sarpanches in Gujarat are actually earning.
