What is the Difference Between CAT Qualifying Marks and CAT Final Marks?

There are two rounds of CAT Cutoff based on which the students are selected for admission. The first round analyzes the qualifying marks and the second round analyzes the final CAT cutoff achieved by the candidates and hence the admission is granted.

Below mentioned are the basic differences between the CAT Qualifying Marks and CAT Final marks.

CAT Qualifying Marks

CAT Final Marks

CAT qualifying marks are the minimum marks obtained by candidates to be shortlisted for the interview calls.

These are the final cat cutoff marks that select candidates for further admission process such as WAT/GD/PI rounds.

Students with minimum CAT qualifying marks may or may not proceed to the further rounds of admission.

Students who secure the final cat cutoff may or may not go for the further rounds of college admissions.

IIMs declare the minimum marks required to pass the cat exam right before the declaration of CAT result.

Once the IIM declares the CAT Result, the final cat cutoff marks and final cat percentiles are released.

The minimum marks required to pass the cat exam usually reach 90+ percentile while the newer IIMs offer admission at 85+ percentile as well.

The final CAT cutoff scores/percentiles may go beyond 99+ for the Top IIM colleges and 95+ for the newer IIM colleges.

CAT 2025 Score vs Percentile

The CAT Score vs Percentile defines the relation between the marks obtained by candidates in CAT Exam 2025 and their equivalent CAT percentile. Candidates can use their CAT percentile to calculate the cat qualifying marks and their chances of admission to their desired MBA college. For example, if a student obtains 99th percentile, it means there are 99% students who secured less marks than that student. The expected CAT Passing marks 2025 are mentioned in the table below:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CAT pass percentage and how is it calculated?

CAT pass percentage, also known as qualifying percentile, is the minimum score you need to be eligible for admission to various MBA colleges. It is calculated based on your normalized CAT exam score and indicates how many test-takers scored below you. This percentage varies for each college and is officially released as the CAT cutoff after the results are out. Meeting this minimum allows you to apply to CAT accepting institutes.

What are the expected CAT qualifying marks for top IIMs in 2025?

For top IIMs, the expected CAT qualifying percentile for 2025 generally ranges from 85 and above. For example, IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta typically require 85 percentile, while some newer IIMs might have slightly different cutoffs. Remember, these are minimums to be shortlisted for further admission rounds like interviews.

What is the minimum CAT percentile needed for top non-IIM colleges?

Top non-IIM colleges usually have a CAT qualifying percentile starting from 85-95 and above. For instance, institutes like FMS Delhi and IIFT often look for percentiles in the 95-99 range. Other good colleges like IMT Ghaziabad or SPJIMR Mumbai also expect candidates to score 95+ percentile to be considered for admission processes.

Does meeting CAT qualifying marks guarantee admission to an MBA college?

No, simply meeting the minimum CAT qualifying marks does not guarantee admission to any top MBA college. These marks only make you eligible for the next stages of the admission process, like Written Ability Test, Group Discussion, and Personal Interview rounds. Final admission depends on your overall profile and performance in these subsequent rounds, where colleges apply their final cutoff.

What is the difference between CAT qualifying marks and final marks?

CAT qualifying marks are the initial minimum scores needed to be shortlisted for interview calls, typically released before results. Final CAT marks are the actual cutoffs set by colleges after results, based on which candidates are selected for admission to subsequent rounds like WAT, GD, and PI. While qualifying marks ensure eligibility, final marks determine your actual chance of proceeding.

How does the CAT score relate to the CAT percentile?

The CAT score is your raw or scaled marks in the exam, while the CAT percentile indicates your relative performance compared to other test-takers. For example, a 99th percentile means you scored better than 99% of the candidates. Colleges use your percentile, derived from your score, to determine eligibility and cutoffs for admission, rather than just the raw score.

Why do CAT exam qualifying marks change every year?

CAT exam qualifying marks vary annually due to several factors. These include the overall difficulty level of the question paper, the total number of students who appeared for the exam, the previous years cutoff trends, and the total number of seats available in CAT accepting colleges. College ranking also influences their specific cutoff requirements each year.
