Alagappa University was established in May 1985 by a Special Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu with the goal of supporting research, development, and diffusion of knowledge in many fields of study. Alagappa University is UGC approved and is a well developed institution for around 44 Departments, 9 Centers, and 2 Constituent Colleges. It comprises around 46 Affiliated Colleges located in the districts of Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram. One of which is an autonomous college and the other one is Alagappa University Model Constituent College of Arts and Science, respectively, are located in Kilakarai and Paramakudi.
The University provides instruction in four modes: regular, weekend, distance, and collaborative. The University serves a student enrollment of approximately 1.12 lakhs across various modalities of education.
Alagappa University distance education application procedure starts in the month of May. According to the UGC notification, Alagappa University has yet to receive approval from UGC-DEB to provide distance education courses for the January 2023 session.

The University has not yet disclosed the placement data for 2023. However, the NIRF report 2023 has been published. According to the report, at Alagappa University placements 2022, 47 UG (3 years), 176 PG (2 years), and 16 PG (3 years) students were placed. The average package for UG (3 years) students was INR 1.44 LPA. The median package for PG (2 years) and PG (3 years) programmes was INR 2.46 LPA and INR 2.70 LPA, respectively.
