The JEE Advanced 2025 results have already been announced and 14 of them have the perfect 100 percentile. Given that IIT Bombay is amongst the first preferences of the top scorers, it is relevant to learn more about its selection process and scores required for engineering branches. Now, Computer Science requires a minimal score of 320, whereas other branches require rank cutoffs.
IIT Bombay Suspends Caste Data Disclosure in Campus Placements
IIT Bombay has suspended Public Sector Units' (PSUs) access to students' caste data during campus placements, amidst fears of discrimination. This was done following a 2023 complaint to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) by Dheeraj Singh, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur, stating that IIT Bombay and other institutions were abetting discriminatory behavior by disclosing caste data to recruiters, which would lead to prejudice against marginalized students.
Instead of this, the NCSC directed IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and the Ministry of Education to submit an action report. IIT Bombay clarified that it had previously collected caste data only for PSU recruitment verification purposes but formally suspended the practice in 2024. The institution further stated that its placement office was not directly involved but was aware of the previous practice of category profiling, which has now been suspended.
This is not the first time IIT Bombay has been in the news. Last year, a suicide of a first-year student resulted in allegations of caste-based discrimination, although an investigation showed no direct evidence. Since then, IIT Bombay has in place anti-discrimination guidelines to maintain inclusivity.
IIT Bombay Admission Criteria 2025
As one of India's premier engineering colleges, IIT Bombay admits students on the basis of Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling, seat allocation based on JEE Advanced scores, preference of candidates, and reservation.
JEE Advanced Score Requirements per Branch
The following estimated score cut-offs are required to be exceeded by candidates in order to be granted admission to IIT Bombay:
- Computer Science & Engineering: 320+ marks
- Electrical Engineering: 250-300 marks
- Electronics Engineering: 250-300 marks
- Civil & Mechanical Engineering: 250-300 marks
The JEE Advanced cutoff varies every year by 5-10 marks based on competition and available seats.
Minimum Qualifying Marks
Candidates need to achieve the following minimum percentage marks in JEE Advanced for eligibility to IIT Bombay:
- General Category: 35%
- OBC-NCL/EWS: 31.5%
- SC/ST/PWD: 17.5%
For Computer Science & Engineering, an approximate score of 285-290 out of 360 would be the estimated requirement for admission.
