Harcourt Butler Technological University (HBTU), Kanpur Highlights

Harcourt Butler Technical University was established in 1921 at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and was named after Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler, the Governor of the United Provinces during British India. It is known to be one of the oldest engineering institutes of the country and offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and Doctoral Programs in engineering and computer applications. This university is approved by AICTE and recognized by UGC. It is accredited by NAAC with the grade of ‘A+’ and is affiliated with Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU). In 1921, the institution was renamed as the Government Technical Institute, and in 1926, it became known as the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI) before being upgraded to a university in 2016 under Act No. 11 of the government of Uttar Pradesh. The university has two campuses and is spread out over an area of 328.8 acres in Kanpur.

HBTU Kanpur has established four schools: the School of Engineering, the School of Chemical Technology, the School of Basic and Applied Sciences, and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. It offers UG and PG programs such as B.Tech(CSE, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Electronics, IT, Chemical, Bio-Chemical, Food, Oil, Paint, Plastic, and Leather), B.Sc., M.Tech, MCA, MBA, M.Sc., and Ph.D. programs. To get admission to HBTU, you need to pass the National Level Entrance Exam required for each course. Admission for the MBA program requires you to pass the CAT and CUET-PG. BTech at HBTU requires you to pass JEE Main and CUET. Admission into PhD. Programs across all departments are made on the basis of entrance exams and on an interview basis, which is conducted by the university.

The Placements are good; the highest package and average package were INR 36 LPA and INR 9.30 LPA. In all, 484 positions were made available during HBTU Placements 2023. The university also observed an 84.02% placement track record. Over 150 companies took part in the placement process in 2023. In 2023, Adani Wilmar, Cognizant, and Aarti Industries Limited were among the top employers at HBTU Kanpur.

HBTU Campus is divided into two parts, i.e., the east campus and the west campus. The East Campus is also known as the academic block and comprises of administrative offices and various departments, a central library, an auditorium, a workshop, cafeterias, a computer centre, a guest house, a medical centre, an electronics department, a bank, four girls' hostels, two boys' hostel,s and a sports ground. The West Campus comprises three boys' hostels, DBRA hotels, new hostels, a gymnasium, a community center, residential quarters, a bank, and playgrounds.
