The Harcourt Butler Technical University also known as HBTU, is one of the leading Residential University which focuses on Research, Development and Incubation in the field of Engineering, Technology, Basic & Applied Sciences, Humanities, Social Science, & Management Architecture. It was established in the year 1921 at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh and was named after Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler, governor of United Provinces during British India. It is known to be one of the oldest engineering institutes of the country and offers Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Doctoral Programmes in engineering and computer applications. On September 1, 2016, it was granted the status of University under the HBTU Act, 2016 passed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

HBTU Campus is divided into two parts i.e. the east campus and the west campus. The East Campus is also known as the academic block and comprises of administrative offices and various departments, central library, auditorium, workshop, cafeterias, computer centre, guest house, medical centre, electronics department, bank, four girls' hostel, two boys' hostel and sports ground. The West Campus comprises of three boys' hostel, DBRA hotels, new hostels, gymnasium, community centre, residential quarters, bank and playgrounds.

JEE Advanced also known as Joint Entrance Examination- Advanced is a national level entrance examination conducted annually by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in the month of May.

JEE Main also known as Joint Entrance Examination- Main, is also a national level entrance examination which was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) until this year, but from upcoming sessions, the examination would be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in the months of January and April.

UPSEE also known as Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination, is a state level entrance examination conducted by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU)in the month of April.

GATE also known as Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is a Post Graduate level entrance examination, conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology and IISc Bangalore on behalf of National Coordinating Board. The examination is conducted in the month of February.

The institute grants scholarships funded by the government of Uttar Pradesh, based on the financial status of the students.
