Chennai: As part of further boosting the speed of innovation in clean and green energy technology, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-Madras) partnered with the United Kingdom's Energy Systems Catapult (ESC). The partnership is for accelerating quicker high-speed development towards net-zero via research, co-operation, and market commercialization of emerging new-energy technologies.
A Giant Leap Towards Clean Energy Development
IIT-Madras's Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Energy Systems Catapult is to unlock the potential for new innovation in the world to fight climate change. The two organizations will enable co-innovation programmes, namely in the following:
- Renewable energy technologies
- Smart grids and energy storage
- Electric mobility solutions
- Green hydrogen technologies
- Green ports and maritime energy systems
The collaboration is a testament to the two institutions' commitment to leading in the development of decarbonization solutions and transforming the world towards cleaner, greener energy systems.
About Energy Systems Catapult (ESC)
Established in 2015, Energy Systems Catapult is a UK government-backed innovation centre. It is one of nine specialist technology and innovation centres backed by Innovate UK, the UK national innovation agency. It fills the gap between government, industry, and academia by taking early-stage concepts and turning them into market-ready products and services through the Catapult Network. ESC has a key role in the upscaling of net-zero technologies between research centers and businesses across the UK and beyond.
Highest-Level Presence at Signing
Highest-level presence at signing was noted with the highest ranking personnel from both sides, which indicated the strategic partnership character of the engagement.
From IIT-Madras:
- Prof. Manu Santhanam, Dean, Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (ICSR)
- Prof. Satya Seshadri, Faculty Head, Energy Consortium
- Nikhil Tambe, CEO, Energy Consortium
From Energy Systems Catapult UK: Brendan O'Neill, Innovator Support and International Advisor
Other attendees: Babita Sharma, British High Commission, Senior Net Zero Advisor
Their presence represented the immense government and institutional support foregrounding this Indo-UK collaboration for energy innovation.
Benefit to Indian Researchers and Startups
Maybe the most compelling attraction of the union is greater access to the world networks of innovation that it embodies. Indian students, researchers, and entrepreneurs will be better positioned to interact with global stakeholders, access cutting-edge technology, and receive guidance on how to bring their innovation to market.
The partnership can further be the foundation for collaborative pilot programs, research, and workshops to meet India's and the UK's energy needs and challenges individually. Solutions, in a two-country focus, will be locally context-driven but scalable worldwide.
A Vision for a Sustainable Future
The cooperation, according to the officials, complements India and the UK's shared net-zero goal and will raise the global benchmark for clean energy. Through combined expertise, assets, and markets, the institutions aim to address some of the energy transition and climate action's most challenging challenges.
