IIT Madras has introduced a new course with the motive of avoiding accidents in factories, mines, and the energy sector. The course is the first one of its kind ever introduced. The course has been named the Postgraduate Diploma in Process Safety and seeks to enhance the safety skills of working professionals.
The course is designed for students who already possess a BE or B.Tech in Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Petroleum Engineering, or other such disciplines. Other candidates who possess an MSc in Chemistry with at least two or more years of work experience are also eligible to apply.
The course will be delivered online by IIT Madras' Centre for Outreach and Digital Education (CODE). The center is responsible for all online and outreach courses of the institute.
The deadline for submission of the application is 31st May 2025. The entry examination will be held on 13th July 2025. The candidates are requested to apply using the official link: https://code.iitm.ac.in/processsafety
Course co-ordinator Professor Rajagopalan Srinivasan discussed the rationale behind such a course. He quoted that in 2024 alone, at least 240 factory and allied industry incidents occurred in India. These incidents have resulted in more than 400 deaths and over 850 serious injuries. The majority of these incidents occurred due to ignorance about safety procedures.
He further added that this course is designed for working professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge of workplace safety. They will be instructed about contemporary safety regulations and how to prevent common errors leading to accidents.
The program is flexible and convenient for working professionals. It follows a trimester system with three terms annually—September to December, January to April, and May to August. Up to three courses can be taken per term by students, and the whole program can be finished within one to two years.
