Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad Admission

Arnav Tyagi check

IIM Ahmedabad the top business institute of India having national importance in order to improve the education quality and encourage enrolment of more non-technical students keeps revising its selection procedure.

The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad has recently released a set of rules regarding the selection procedure for admission in PGP programmes of 2019-2020 batch. From all the changes introduced the major one is the revised required percentile of CAT 2018, which is further reduced. Candidates applying through General Category under the revised cutoff needs overall 80 percentile with a sectional percentile of a minimum of 70 percentile for all sections.

IIM Ahmedabad Admission is a 2 step selection procedure:

Step 1: Qualifying CAT

Step 2: Academic Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI)

The above-mentioned selection procedure which includes qualifying CAT in the first step followed by personal interview. The candidates qualifying CAT with the minimum required percentile only are eligible for the next and final round. The candidates on basis of their academic profiles and qualifying marks are awarded application ratings or application scores. Evaluating the AR helps in shortlisting the candidates for the next round. In the final selection, round candidates will have to appear for the Academic Writing Test (AWT) and Personal interview. The seats are allotted to the candidates performing exceptionally well in all the above-mentioned rounds.

Candidates aspiring to take admissions in IIM-A needs to understand that qualifying CAT 2018 is important but that alone will not guarantee a seat in the desired course. It’s the overall performance of the candidate which plays the key role in admission. Last year a trend was observed where a candidate with a percentile of 82 where enrolled whereas the student having 99 percentile failed to impress the selection committee. Percentile of CAT 2018 is a qualifier for admission and also ensure an Application Rating. The more the percentile, the higher will be the Application Rating.

Other than CAT scores candidates are also evaluated on basis of below-mentioned criteria:

Marks obtained in Class 10: Candidates irrespective of the board will get a score of 10 if the particular candidate has scored more than 90 percent in the qualifying exam.

Marks obtained in Class 12: Candidates qualified with 90 percent and above from Science and Commerce will be awarded highest ratings.

Marks Obtained in Graduation: Candidates are scored on basis of 7 categories as mentioned below :

Category NameStream in Bachelor’s DegreeMinimum percentage required for Top Rating
Category 1Medicine70 percent and above
Category 2CA, ICWA, CS degrees63 percent and above
Category 3 and Category 5Economics, Finance, Commerce, Science, BBA, BCA, paramedical80 percent and above
Category 6Arts, Humanities, Law, Journalism75 percent and above
