Following the declaration of the CBSE Class 12th Result 2025, students may find the term "RT" on their marksheet. This may be confusing if you don't know what it means and what to do next.
What Does RT Mean in CBSE?
RT in CBSE means Repeat Theory. It means that a student has failed in the theory aspect of one or more subjects, though they might pass in the internal or practical examination of the subject. In order to pass a subject in CBSE, students must obtain at least 33% marks in practice and theory (wherever applicable), and failure in either aspect makes them a partial fail.
RT generally appears on a marksheet when the student scores below passing marks in theory exam. The board recognizes this and offers a second chance to students to clear the subject by appearing for compartment exam. It should be noted here that an RT is distinct from a complete fail; it reflects that the student has been given a chance to score high in theory without having to reappear for practicals.
What to Do After Getting RT?
Students with an RT status are entitled to the CBSE Compartment Exam held exclusively for students who didn't clear one or two subjects. After the result announcements, CBSE typically announces the date sheet of the compartment exam within weeks.
To move ahead, students must:
- Be current through the official website of CBSE or the school regarding compartment exam date sheets.
- Apply for the compartment exam in time either through their school or cbse.gov.in.
- Begin concentrated preparation with stress on the theory segment where marks were lacking.
One of the most common queries by the students is if they have to reappear for the whole subject or only the theory paper. The good news here is that CBSE does not cancel out the marks of the practical/internal assessment, and therefore the students must appear for the theory paper alone in the compartment exam. This makes it a streamlined process and not so scary.
Most notably, RT is not a failure. Once a student clears the theory segment of the compartment exam, CBSE provides a fresh marksheet indicating the updated result. It's a second chance — not a failure.
RT on your marksheet will be disappointing to see, but it's a defendable position. CBSE provides a transparent and fair mechanism through which students can rectify their scores and move forward with their studies or career pursuits. Keep calm, follow official announcements, and use this time to study wisely for the next compartment exams.
