The UGC NET Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) is a government fellowship to help young researchers in India access important financial support, professional mentoring and career development initiatives in academia and research.

The prime objective of the UGC NET JRF initiative is to identify academically gifted individuals with the potential to access research and help develop a strong research career or academic career, based on their research skills.

  • It promotes interdisciplinary research and collaboration by fostering and showcasing innovation and creativity across academic disciplines.
  • The fellowship supports “full-time” research for a maximum of five years or until the fellowship recipient obtains PhD status whichever is sooner. 
  • It is a merit-based and competitive fellowship, where a fellowship recipient's selection is based on a combination of UGC NET exam results and academic and research experience.
  • The UGC NET JRF is available to all discipline fields and for all candidates that qualify both Paper 1 and Paper 2 and satisfy the age limit (below 30 years).

Eligibility Criteria for UGC-NET JRF 2025

To apply for the UGC-NET Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) 2025, candidates must fulfill eligibility criteria related to the age limit, qualification level, and qualifying marks. Given below are the eligibility criteria:

  • Age Limit: The upper age limit (as on 1 January 2025) for applicants is 30 years. Age relaxation of 5 years shall be permitted for applicants from OBC-NCL, SC/ST, and PwD categories.
  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have a master's degree or equivalent degree in relevant subject with at least 55 percent marks (or equivalent grade) overall (or 50 percent marks for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD categories). Candidates who have perused their master's degree or who are in the final year of their Master's degree are also eligible to apply, subject to conditions. 
  • Minimum Qualifying Marks: To qualify for the JRF, candidates must have obtained a minimum of 55 percent marks in post-graduation (or 50 percent for reserved category candidates), and also secure the qualification cut off in the UGC-NET 2025 exam.
  • Eligibility for Assistant Professorship: Candidates who qualify the UGC-NET but do not qualify for the JRF could still be eligible for the Assistant Professor position in Indian universities/colleges.
