Accounting for Partnership Firms and Companies

• Nature of partnership; partnership deed; profit sharing ratio; changes in profit sharing ratio; admission of a partner; retirement and death of a partner.• Goodwill: valuation methods; treatment of goodwill in the books of the firm.• Dissolution of partnership: settlement of accounts, both partner’s capital and current accounts; insolvency of partners; piecemeal distribution.• Company accounts: Issue, forfeiture and reissue of shares; issue of debentures; redemption of debentures.

Part B

Financial Statement Analysis OR Computerised Accounting

Option 1: Financial Statement Analysis• Financial statements of company: Income Statement (Profit & Loss Account) and Balance Sheet.• Tools of analysis: ratio analysis (liquidity, solvency, profitability, turnover etc.); trend analysis; comparative statements; common size statements.• Cash flow statement: preparation, components, cash flows from operating, investing and financing activities. Option 2: Computerized Accounting• Basic concepts of computerized accounting.• Use of accounting software: recording transactions, ledger posting, generating trial balance, financial statements via software.• Advantages vs limitations of computerized accounting.

Practical Work

• Practical exercises involving preparation of accounting records: partner’s accounts, treatment of goodwill, share transactions, company/grant application of partnership/net profit distribution etc.• Analysis of real financial statement extracts: computing and interpreting ratios, preparing cash flow statements, trend/comparative analysis.• Project work: individual or group project based on accounting practice, possibly using case studies or software.• Viva-voce / oral examination based on practical and project work.
