IIT Madras has introduced the world's first online Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Data Science and Applications, designed for both students and working professionals. Initially offered as a B.Sc in Programming and Data Science, the program has now extended to a comprehensive 4-year BS degree.
One standout feature of the BS program is the chance for an eight-month apprenticeship or a project with companies or research institutes. Also, the program has multiple entry and exit points, making it flexible for you to earn a Foundation Certificate, Diploma, B.Sc, or BS Degree, depending on the level of program completion.
The program is open to nearly everyone. That’s correct! Whether you’ve recently completed Class XII or finished X years ago (there’s no age limit), you qualify. This 4-year BS Degree at IIT Madras requires only Class X English and Mathematics eligibility, allowing students to study at the institute without clearing JEE. Furthermore, since the course is entirely online, you can enroll from anywhere without the need to relocate.
The curriculum covers various subjects, including foundational courses in Mathematics, Statistics, and Programming, Diploma-level courses in Programming and data science, and Advanced degree-level topics such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, and Business Analytics. Students engage in weekly online assignments, in-person quizzes, and end-of-term exams, with the flexibility to progress at their own pace.
Financial support includes scholarships for learners from families with annual incomes below ₹5 lakh, with up to 75% fee waivers. The program has received recognition from global education bodies for its innovative approach and accessibility.
BS in Data Science and Application Program Structure
To earn the BS Degree, students must complete all four levels, accumulating a total of 142 credits through 38 courses, which typically takes 4–8 years, depending on the learner’s pace. The program features a blend of pre-recorded and live online sessions, weekly assignments, and in-person, invigilated quizzes and exams at centers across India and select international locations. At the BS level, students have the opportunity to undertake an eight-month apprenticeship or a project with industry or research organizations, enhancing their practical experience.
