About University of Calicut

Established in the year 1968, the University of Calicut, situated in Thrissur is one of the largest University of the state and the second University set up in the state after the University of Kerala. The University was established to smooth education stream of Kerala University and was created jointly by the Government of State and Kerala University. The four post-graduate departments of the University of Kerala operating in Calicut were documented to the new University along with 54 constituent colleges spread across seven northern districts.

The University of Calicut at present comprises 30 postgraduate departments, and 426 colleges are affiliated to the University of Calicut in Kerala. Every year thousands of students become part of this growing organization and today it is the largest residential cum affiliating University in Kerala.  

The University campus is located in the south of Calicut which is the main hub of academic activities. Other than dedicated teaching and research departments for 30 postgraduate courses the campus also has the following blocks:

Teaching and Research Centre at the University of Calicut:

The University of Calicut has an Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMRC), which is one of the 17 centers setups of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to produce video programs to broadcast on Doordarshan network. The research is carried out in software and hardware aspects of audiovisual technology, and the center is expected to provide interactive educational multimedia WBTs and CDs.

Dr. John Matthai Centre:

Dr. John Matthai Centre is of exceptional importance to the Calicut University. The center was named after former finance minister Dr. John Matthai. The Department of Economics was established on the land donated by Dr. John Matthai. Slowly, the department had grown into the center for higher studies in the field of Economics. The faculties under the department have undertaken many research projects supported and sponsored by ICSSR, UGC, UNDP, Planning Commission of India, and Government of India. The faculties have also participated in various National and International conferences and presented their publications, research paper, and journals at the National and International platforms. 

Many students under the Department of Economics, University of Calicut have been to top positions in prestigious institutions like including World Bank, IMF, London School of Economics, Cambridge University, etc.

Candidates for admission to the B.Tech. Engineering degree course shall be required to have passed the Higher Secondary Examination of State Board of Kerala or examinations recognized equivalent by any Universities of Kerala, with 50% marks in Mathematics and 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics put together. Candidates, belonging to Socially and Educationally Backwards classes with a total family annual income not exceeding the limit notified by the Government of Kerala from time to time, need only 45% marks in Mathematics and 45% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics put together. Candidates belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe need only a pass in the qualifying examination. Candidates have to qualify the State Level Entrance examination conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations or State level/National level Entrance Examination approved by the Government of Kerala as equivalent. They shall also satisfy the conditions regarding age and physical fitness as prescribed by the University of Calicut.


The admission procedure is explained below:

a) The percentage of seats to be filled by the Commissioner for Entrance Examination, and the management will be as per the decision of the University and Govt. of Kerala. At present 85% of the total seats available ( both Merit and Management ) are filled through centralised allotment process by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations , Govt. of Kerala.

b) For NRI quota ( remaining 15% seats) the candidates should submit the application in the prescribed form to the Principal, Calicut University Institute of Engineering and Technology within the time fixed by the University.

c) The University will prepare a separate rank list on the basis of the marks obtained in Physics , Chemistry and Mathematics in the qualifying examination by the candidates who have applied for admission to this Institution under NRI quota . This rank list will be published in the notice board & website of this institution. Any complaint with regard to the rank list should be lodged within 5 days to the Principal after the publication of the rank list.

d) The admission to this Institute under NRI quota will be on the basis of the rank list so prepared. The intimation for counselling will be sent to all candidates by post . The date will be published in the College Website.

e) This Prospectus is subject to modification/addition/deletion, as may be deemed necessary by the University of Calicut.

Exam related information is available at Pareeksha Bhavan of Calicut University which regularly releases notification regarding the entrance examinations and the trial allotments.

The exam related results are released on the official website of the University of Calicut at The examination is controlled by Pareeksha Bhavan which is the central nerve of the University. The university also conducts Trial Allotments to provide an idea about the chances of getting admission in their respective subjects. Once the trial allotment is conducted, the candidate is given a chance to verify and change the option and complete their admission procedure.
