The present-day Panjab University traces its origin to the Punjab University established in 1882 at Lahore (now in Punjab, Pakistan). The current main campus at Chandigarh is spread over 550 acres in sectors 14 and 25, consisting of the teaching area along with facilities such as Central Library, Fine Arts Museum, Sports Complex, Health centers, shopping centers etc. Altogether, there are seventy five departments, 188 affiliated colleges, fifteen campus centers and four regional centers offering both undergraduate and post graduate degrees in a variety of courses encompassing engineering, medicine, commerce, humanities etc.
Panjab University is regarded as one of the best universities functioning in India at the moment. Due to its esteemed faculty along with a continuously developing infrastructure, the university frequently features in top rankings in a majority of surveys.
