Kerala has introduced a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country by incorporating Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) into school education. The revised Information and Communication Technology (ICT) textbooks, prepared by the Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) under the state’s education department, will be implemented across government and aided schools starting the 2025–26 academic session.
With this step, Kerala has become the first Indian state to formally integrate AVGC learning at the school level. The new modules are designed to familiarize students with creative technologies such as animation, gaming, visual storytelling, and digital design, enabling them to explore how these skills are applied in real-world industries.
Skill-Oriented Education in Line with NEP 2020
The inclusion of AVGC in school curricula is closely aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which highlights the importance of skill-based education and preparing students for new-age career paths. By weaving AVGC concepts into ICT lessons, the state aims to equip learners with both digital literacy and employable skills.

Education experts have welcomed the reform, noting that the move can help create a future-ready workforce for India’s fast-expanding AVGC sector, which has been recognized by the central government as a “sunrise industry.” The introduction at the school level is expected to build a talent pipeline that connects classrooms directly with opportunities in the creative and digital economy.
By taking this step, Kerala has once again reinforced its reputation as a leader in progressive educational reforms, ensuring that students are not only academically prepared but also trained in emerging skills relevant to the industries of tomorrow.
