IIT Delhi has implemented a redesigned curriculum that requires smaller class sizes and lowers the overall credit load across undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs in an effort to ease the academic burden on first-year students. The academic year 2025–2026 will see the introduction of the new curriculum. The institute announced in a statement on Tuesday that "all first-year courses are now mandated to have small class sizes," indicating a structural change to enable more individualized attention and enhance student-faculty engagement. Furthermore, it stated that “all programs have a small reduction in credits, with a more focused core.”
The changes come after a thorough curriculum review that started in 2022 and took into account input from industry professionals, alumni, and students. Students can pursue minors, specializations, and an optional honors program as part of the new undergraduate program, which is characterized as "an outcomes-based, flexible curriculum." "To prepare our graduates for the future, we have redesigned and updated our curriculum," stated Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT-Delhi. “After receiving a great deal of input from stakeholders, the new curriculum was developed, and it offers our students flexibility and experiential learning.”
In order to encourage students to take electives outside of their main academic courses, credit requirements have been lowered. According to the statement, "many branches are now offering a flexible core curriculum," enabling students to seek extra credentials such advanced M.Tech./MS (Research) degrees. The curriculum places more of an emphasis on interactive, hands-on learning, improves lab and tutorial components, and adds early departmental experience to help students in their first year. "The majority of departmental courses include laboratory and tutorial components that enable students to interact deeply and meaningfully with faculty," the institute stated.
Beyond easing academic load, the curriculum has modules on creative expression and ethical reasoning.First, AI-based code generators will also be integrated into the foundational programming course to help students “write better programs for more complex problems in less time”. The changes extend to postgraduate and PhD programmes as well, with the introduction of project-based capstone components, industry-linked internships, and formalised pathways for interdisciplinary research and conversion to doctoral degrees.
