IIM Kashipur is currently under scrutiny after an email allegedly sent to its final-year students asked unplaced candidates to formally “opt out” of the placement process. The intention, as alleged, is to maintain the school’s claim of a near-100% placement rate—essentially excluding those who didn’t secure a job from official statistics.
The letter, which spread swiftly on social media, told students who hadn't had job offers to let their placement office know they wanted to withdraw. Critics argue this strategy unfairly skews the institute’s data and misleads prospective students, giving the false impression that every enrolled student secures a role.
On platforms like LinkedIn and X, education professionals expressed doubts and concern. Some described the practice as common among private MBA institutions, though commenters emphasized it’s not standard across all IIMs.
A lively thread on Reddit’s r/MBAIndia discussed the issue too. One user suggested this could be a typical tactic:
“IIM Kashipur asks unplaced students to ‘opt out’… so that they can maintain accurate records.”
The practice has sparked a broader debate around transparency and ethical reporting within higher education. Some admit that placement statistics hugely influence an institute’s reputation and future admissions. But a lot of people think this approach hurts faith in the data and puts too much pressure on pupils.
